Chapter 3 - The Eviction and the Reality Check

By the next afternoon, Vanessa’s triumphant discharge from the luxury private maternity wing felt like a march to the gallows. When they arrived at their exclusive penthouse downtown, they were met not by their private concierge, but by two burly security guards and a moving crew.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vanessa screamed, clutching the baby tightly. "Do you know who we are?"

"Yes, Mrs. Vance," the head guard said, completely unfazed. "We have strict orders from Apex Holdings. You are permitted to take your clothing, personal effects, and the baby’s immediate necessities. All furniture, art, and tech belong to the property. Your sleek sports car in the garage has also been repossessed."

Vanessa turned on Daniel, her face contorted with rage. "Do something! You’re the billionaire! Call the police!"

Daniel looked broken. "The police won't help, Vanessa. The house, the car, the company... it was all under my mother's holding umbrella. I thought it was just a formality for tax purposes. I didn't know she could just... turn it off."

For the first time, Vanessa looked terrified. The luxury life she had married into was evaporating before her eyes. They were forced to pack their clothes into cheap suitcases and hail a standard yellow taxi, retreating to a cramped, drafty two-bedroom apartment that Daniel had bought years ago as a joke investment. It was dark, dusty, and smelled of old paint.

"We can't live here!" Vanessa wept, looking at the peeling wallpaper. "My son deserves the best!"

"Then you shouldn't have insulted the woman who paid for it," Daniel muttered, his folded arms now looking weak rather than arrogant.
