Chapter 8 - The Verdict

Six months later, the legal proceedings reached their final conclusion in the county courthouse.
Diane Harrington and Sophia Vance stood before Judge Thomas to hear their sentencing. The evidence presented by the prosecution—ranging from wire fraud and identity forgery to conspiracy and corporate sabotage—was overwhelming and irrefutable. Diane’s high-priced defense attorney could do little more than ask for leniency based on her age and previous standing in the community, arguments that Judge Thomas dismissed outright.
"Mrs. Harrington, you abused your position of trust, manipulated your own family through elaborate financial and psychological schemes, and committed multiple felonies in a calculated attempt to destroy your son’s life and marriage," Judge Thomas said sternly, his gavel poised. "Justice requires accountability, regardless of social status."
Diane was sentenced to four years in a federal correctional facility, with no possibility of early parole for the first two years, alongside mandatory financial restitution to restore the drained trust funds. Sophia received a similar sentence for her active participation in the fraud and conspiracy charges.
When the gavel came down with a sharp, final crack, Diane looked across the courtroom toward the gallery. For a brief second, her eyes met Mark’s.

Mark didn't look angry. He didn't look triumphant. He just looked at her with a quiet, profound pity—and then he turned his back, took Chloe’s hand, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight.
They drove home in comfortable silence, the radio playing a soft acoustic melody. The nightmare was officially over. The court system had delivered its judgment, but more importantly, their lives were entirely their own again.
