Chapter 6 - Clearing the Air

A week after Sophia’s aborted confrontation, the household experienced a strange, beautiful kind of quiet—the kind that comes after a violent storm clears the air and leaves the world smelling of clean earth and fresh possibilities.
Mark had spent the last several days dismantling every financial and emotional tether tying him to his mother’s control. He had hired a forensic accountant who uncovered even deeper layers of manipulation: Diane had been secretly sabotaging Mark’s career promotions for years by contacting his corporate superiors under false pretenses, trying to keep him financially dependent and emotionally isolated.
Sitting across from Chloe at the kitchen island over a cup of decaf coffee, Mark let out a long, heavy sigh of relief.
"I talked to the district attorney this morning," Mark said, stirring his coffee slowly. "The case against my mother and Sophia is ironclad. Between the financial fraud, the forged documents, and the witness testimonies from the private investigator, they're facing serious felony charges. There won't be any plea deals that let them walk away scot-free."
Chloe reached across the counter and squeezed his hand. "It’s hard, isn't it? Knowing the person who raised you turned out to be someone entirely different from who you thought she was."
"It hurts," Mark admitted honestly, looking down at their joined hands. "I won't lie and say I don't feel grief. But it’s not grief for my mother—it’s grief for the mother I thought I had, the one who only ever existed in my imagination. The reality was a cage. And you helped me break out of it, Chloe."
"We broke out of it together," Chloe smiled gently. "Now, we get to build our own family. On our own terms. No meddling relatives, no secret agendas, just us."
"Speaking of terms," Mark smiled, a playful gleam returning to his eyes for the first time in weeks. "We never did settle on a name for our little boy. And with Mom in custody, we don't have to worry about anyone trying to decree a name like 'Arthur' ever again."

Chloe laughed, a warm, musical sound that filled the kitchen. "Well, I was thinking... since he’s a fighter who helped us uncover the truth before he was even born, maybe something strong. What about Leo?"
"Leo Harrington," Mark tested the name out loud, his face lighting up with joy. "I love it. Leo it is."
