Chapter 3 - Sirens and Secrets

The red and blue flashing lights of two police cruisers painted the pastel balloons and the ruined gift table in harsh, flickering strokes. Two uniform officers stepped out of the lead car, their boots crunching on the gravel driveway as they pushed through the stunned crowd of party guests.
"Which one of you placed the call?" asked Officer Miller, a tall, stern-looking veteran with a notebook already open in his hand.
"I did, Officer," Chloe said clearly, stepping forward. Mark instinctively moved to stand beside her, his shoulder brushing hers in a silent plea for forgiveness and solidarity. Chloe handed the officer the manila envelope she had kept safely tucked in her purse all afternoon. "My name is Chloe Harrington. I am filing charges against Diane Harrington for breaking and entering our private property, destruction of personal property, verbal assault, and a documented pattern of ongoing financial fraud and conspiracy to commit parental alienation."
Diane let out a sharp gasp, her face contorting with absolute disbelief. "You can't arrest me! Do you know who I am? My family built this town! Mark, tell them! Tell these officers your wife is insane!"
Mark looked at his mother, and for the first time in his life, there was no hesitation in his eyes, no excuse made for her "old-fashioned" ways. "She’s right, Officer," Mark said flatly, his voice hard as iron. "Take her."
Officer Miller nodded, stepping up to Diane. "Diane Harrington, you are being placed under arrest for domestic trespassing, malicious destruction of property, and credible allegations of conspiracy and fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
The gasps among the family members were deafening. Aunt Sarah dropped her glass of lemonade; Cousin Greg pulled out his phone to record the arrest from a safe distance. Diane thrashed wildly as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around her wrists, screaming obscenities that shattered whatever illusion of high society she had spent decades cultivating.

As the officers led her toward the back of the cruiser, Diane shot one final, venomous glare toward Chloe. "You won't win!" she shrieked, her voice echoing down the quiet street. "Sophia and I own your future! You'll never see a dime, and you'll never know peace!"
The cruiser doors slammed shut, sealing her away. The backyard fell into a profound, heavy silence. The party was officially over, but a new, terrifyingly real chapter of their lives was just beginning.
