Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Late that evening, after the last of the shocked guests had departed and the broken glass had been swept into heavy-duty trash bags, Chloe and Mark sat in their quiet living room. The pastel balloons hung limply from the ceiling, deflating slowly like the secrets that had just been popped out of existence.
Mark sat with his face buried in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking slightly. "I'm so sorry, Chloe," he choked out, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "All these years... I told you to ignore her. I made excuses for her cruelty because she was my mother. If you hadn't hired that investigator... god, I shudder to think what would have happened when the baby arrived."
Chloe sat across from him on the sofa, her hand resting gently on her swollen belly. She felt a kick—a strong, reassuring thump from their little boy. She looked at her husband, seeing the genuine remorse and devastation etched into his face, and felt the lingering anger melt into a quiet, resolute strength.
"You didn't know the extent of it, Mark," Chloe said softly, leaning forward to place her hand over his. "She raised you to believe her word was law. Breaking free from that kind of psychological conditioning isn't easy. But you chose the right side today. That’s what matters."
Mark looked up, tears shining in his eyes. "What else is in that envelope, Chloe? The investigator... what else did he find?"
Chloe opened the manila folder and slid several printed financial statements across the coffee table. "It’s not just about baby names or Sophia, Mark. For the past three years, Diane has been systematically draining the family trust fund that your grandfather left you. She used forged signatures to move investment funds into accounts controlled exclusively by her—and by Sophia’s real estate firm."
Mark stared at the numbers, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "Sophia... she’s broke. Her restaurant venture failed a year ago. That’s why Mom was pushing her back into my life. They were planning to bleed our assets dry, divorce me under false pretenses using manipulated evidence, and leave us destitute."

"Exactly," Chloe nodded grimly. "And the police financial crimes unit is already expanding the investigation. By morning, her bank accounts will be frozen, and Sophia’s involvement will be fully subpoenaed."
Mark stood up, walked over to the window, and looked out into the moonlit yard where the chaos had unfolded just hours earlier. He took a deep, shuddering breath, then turned back to his wife with absolute clarity in his eyes. "We are going to cut them out completely. Every last trace of their toxic influence. Starting right now."
