Chapter 7 - Building AnewWith the legal battles moving steadily forward through the court system, Chloe and Mark turned their full attention toward preparing for Leo’s arrival. The nursery, which had once been a secondary guest room, was completely transformed.

They painted the walls a soft, calming sage green, accented with warm wood tones and hand-painted woodland creatures. Every trace of Diane’s critical eye and oppressive aesthetic was scrubbed from the house. They replaced the stiff, formal antique furniture with comfortable, modern pieces designed for actual living, laughing, and raising a child.
Word of the family scandal had spread through their social circle, but instead of isolation, Chloe and Mark were met with an overwhelming wave of genuine support. Friends who had previously kept their distance out of fear of Diane’s cutting tongue now reached out with offers of help, meals, and renewed friendship.
One sunny afternoon, Aunt Sarah—who had dropped her lemonade back at the baby shower—showed up at their front door bearing an enormous basket of homemade cookies and a deeply apologetic expression.
"Chloe, Mark, I am so, so sorry," Sarah said earnestly as they invited her into the bright, cheerful kitchen. "At the shower, I was just so shocked by Diane’s outburst. None of us knew the half of what she was doing behind closed doors. We were all cowed by her for decades, and watching you two stand up to her was the bravest thing I’ve ever seen."
Chloe smiled warmly, offering Sarah a seat at the table. "Thank you, Sarah. It wasn't easy, but keeping secrets like that only gives toxic people power. We’re just glad the truth is out in the open where it belongs."

"And you look radiant, Chloe," Sarah beamed, sipping her tea. "That little boy is going to have the strongest, most resilient parents in the world."
As Sarah chatted happily about baby clothes and nursery setups, Mark caught Chloe’s eye across the table and winked. The house felt lighter. The air felt cleaner. The ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest, replaced by the warm, living reality of a family built on mutual love, honesty, and unwavering trust.
