Chapter 2 - The Voice in the Garden

The crisp, high-definition audio filled the sudden silence of the backyard, cutting through the shattered glass and the weeping of startled guests.
"She’s nothing more than a temporary incubator, Mark," Diane’s sharp, unmistakable voice echoed from the tiny speaker of Chloe’s phone. "The moment the baby is born, we file the papers. You get full custody, I help you raise the heir, and that little nobody from the suburbs is out on the street with nothing. Sophia is back in town, and she’s ready to step into her rightful place."
Mark froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in the warm afternoon sunlight. He turned slowly toward his mother, his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and betrayal.
Diane’s triumphant fury vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, trembling panic. Her hands, which had just been gripping the air in rage, fell limply to her sides.
"Mark... darling... that's... that's AI," Diane stammered, her voice cracking as she took a desperate step toward her son. "It’s a deepfake! That conniving little girl made it up using technology to turn you against your own mother!"
"It’s not a deepfake, Diane," Chloe said, her voice steady, cool, and carrying an unshakable authority that made every guest turn their attention entirely to her. She didn't shout. She didn't have to. "That conversation was recorded last Tuesday in your kitchen while Mark and I were supposed to be having a quiet dinner. But thanks to the private investigator I hired when your 'accidental' dropped calls and mysteriously missing mail started adding up, I have the full transcript, the video footage of you handing Sophia a set of house keys, and a record of the financial transfers you've been coordinating behind our backs."
Mark staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. He looked down at the shattered crystal vase near his pregnant wife’s feet, then up at the woman who had raised him. The scales had finally fallen from his eyes.

"Mom," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a grief and anger so deep it terrified the surrounding crowd. "You were plotting to take my child? You were working with Sophia behind my back the entire time?"
Before Diane could invent another lie, the sound of wailing sirens echoed down the suburban street, cutting through the heavy tension like a blade.
