Chapter 5 - The Unwelcome Visitor

Three days later, the fallout from the baby shower had dominated local gossip columns and family group chats alike. Diane had been released on bail, but with strict restraining orders keeping her at least five hundred yards away from Chloe, Mark, and their home. Her bank accounts were frozen tight, and her social standing had evaporated overnight like morning mist.

Chloe was resting on the living room couch, reading a parenting book, when a sharp, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door.

Mark, who was working from his home office on the financial restructuring of their household, shot out of his chair. Before he could reach the hallway, the front door swung open with a loud bang. The smart lock’s override code had been used.

Standing in the doorway was not Diane, but Sophia.

She looked immaculate in a designer trench coat, her blonde hair styled to perfection, but her face was twisted in a mask of sheer panic and desperation. She pushed past the entryway like she owned the place, her eyes locking onto Mark as he stepped out of the hallway.

"Mark! Thank goodness," Sophia cried, throwing her hands up dramatically. "Your mother is completely losing her mind, and the police are looking at my business accounts! You need to call off your wife's lawyer immediately. This is insane—I just came back to town to catch up, and now I’m being dragged into a criminal fraud investigation!"

Chloe calmly stood up from the sofa, smoothing down her sundress, and walked into the living room to stand beside her husband. She didn't look intimidated; she looked like a queen surveying an uninvited pest.

"You're trespassing, Sophia," Chloe said, her voice calm and piercing. "And using an access code Diane gave you illegally doesn't make it a social call. The police were already notified of your arrival the moment our security system flagged your override code. They're about five minutes away."

Sophia’s expression hardened from faux-innocence to venomous rage. "You little parasite! You think you've won because you trapped Mark with a baby? You think you belong in this family? You're nothing! Without Mark, you'd still be living in a cramped apartment working a dead-end job!"

"That's enough," Mark thundered, stepping forward with a fury that made Sophia step back in genuine fear. He pointed a finger straight toward the open door. "Get out of my house, Sophia. Don't ever call me, don't ever text me, and if you ever come within a mile of my wife or my unborn child again, I will personally ensure you spend the next ten years sharing a cell with my mother."

Sophia opened her mouth to argue, but the distant wail of police sirens approaching the driveway silenced her instantly. Realizing her game was entirely up, she spat a curse on the floor, turned on her heel, and stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind her with a force that rattled the frames on the wall.
