Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

Three months later, the dust had completely settled.

Marco had systematically transitioned all of the Cavaliere family assets into fully legitimate, transparent businesses. The old crime syndicates were gone, replaced by real estate development, community funding, and educational foundations. He had fulfilled his father's final wish—to cleanse the family name of the blood that had stained it for generations.

They had relocated to a stunning, secluded estate overlooking the rugged coastline of Maine. The house was filled with light, surrounded by towering pine trees and the constant, soothing rhythm of the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs below.

Nora spent her mornings running along the rugged coastline, her mind finally free of the hyper-vigilance that had defined her adult life. She was no longer looking over her shoulder. She was no longer sleeping with a gun under her pillow.

One evening, Marco found her standing on the wooden deck, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues of amber and violet. He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

"You're thinking too loud," he murmured, his lips pressing a soft kiss against the side of her neck.

"I was just remembering the first day I met you," Nora laughed softly, turning around in his embrace to loop her arms around his neck. "I was so terrified of you. I thought you were going to have me killed and buried under the rose bushes."

"And instead?" Marco smiled, his eyes filled with a deep, consuming warmth that still made her breath catch.

"Instead, you ruined my career, destroyed my worldview, and forced me to fall in love with a man everyone warned me about," she teased, her fingers running through his dark hair.

"A fair trade, I think," Marco murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. "You came into my house to betray me, Detective Vale. But you ended up saving my soul."
