Chapter 4 - The Fragile Illusion

The air in the room grew suffocatingly thin. Nora’s survival instincts, honed by years on the force, told her to reach for the concealed knife in her boot, but her body refused to move.
Marco didn't look angry. He looked profoundly disappointed. He walked over to his desk, his eyes dropping to the scattered papers, then back to her face.
"Your accent is slipping," Marco noted softly, his voice devoid of the warmth he had shown her weeks prior. "And a simple Brazilian housekeeper wouldn't know how to bypass a biometric lock on my garage doors to plant a military-grade GPS tracker on my vehicle."
Nora realized, with a sinking feeling, that the illusion was completely dead. She dropped the submissive posture of Carla, straightening her spine, her jaw tightening as she stepped back into the skin of Detective Nora Vale.
"You knew," she whispered.
"I knew the moment you walked through my door," Marco replied calmly, leaning his hips against the edge of his desk and crossing his arms. "Sandro wanted to throw you in the river the first day. He recognized your face from a precinct surveillance photo three years ago when you were working narcotics."
Nora’s breath hitched. "If you knew who I was, why let me stay? Why let me plant the wires? Why fix my hands?"
"Because you were safe here," Marco said, his gaze locked onto hers with an intensity that burned. "Out there, on the streets, under Marsh's command, you were a dead woman walking. Just like your partner, Danny Ruiz."
Hearing Danny's name from his lips felt like a physical blow. "What do you know about Danny?"
"I know he found out that Marsh was selling confiscated cartel weapons back to the streets," Marco stated flatly. "Danny refused to take a bribe. So Marsh orchestrated that drug bust, tipped off the shooters, and left your partner to die. He sent you here hoping I would find out who you were and kill you for him, wiping his hands clean of another nosy detective."
Nora felt the room tilt. The grief and guilt she had carried for a year suddenly transformed into a white-hot, agonizing rage. "You're lying. You're a mafia boss. You're trying to manipulate me."
"Am I?" Marco took a step closer, closing the distance between them until she could smell the scent of cedar and rain on his jacket. He reached out, his hand hovering near her face, before gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "Look at the evidence, Nora. You're a brilliant detective. Use your brain, not your anger. If I wanted you dead, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

She looked at him, searching for deceit, but found only a fierce, unyielding sincerity. The realization broke through her final defenses. A single tear slipped down her cheek.
Before she could fall apart, Marco’s arms wrapped around her. He pulled her against his chest, holding her with a protective strength that anchored her world. "I've got you," he murmured into her hair. "The illusion is over, Nora. But you are not going back to them. I won't allow it."
