Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

The transition from undercover operative to a protected guest inside the Cavaliere estate was seamless to the outside world, but a turbulent storm within.
Nora no longer wore the maid's uniform. She stayed in a beautifully appointed suite in the east wing, though she spent most of her nights in Marco's study, going through files, mapping out the network of corruption that infected her own precinct.
The dynamic between them shifted into something electric and dangerous. They were no longer master and servant, nor were they hunter and prey. They were two minds fighting the same war, operating in a gray area where the lines of law and crime blurred into meaninglessness.
One evening, as they sat by the fireplace reviewing financial records, Nora’s burner phone vibrated on the table. The screen lit up with Marsh's name.
Marco reached over, placing his hand over hers to steady her trembling fingers. "Answer it. Let him think the trap is still working."
Nora took a deep breath, clicking the receiver. "Lieutenant," she said, keeping her voice tight and anxious.
"Carla, report," Marsh's voice rasped through the speaker, cold and demanding. "The tracker showed the target stopped in the East District. Did you get into his office? Do you have the ledgers?"
"I... I'm close, Lieutenant," Nora lied, her eyes locked onto Marco, who was watching her with a calm, supportive intensity. "He keeps the office locked. I need more time. He's suspicious."
"You don't have time," Marsh snapped. "We're launching a raid on the Cavaliere estate in forty-eight hours. Internal affairs is sniffing around, and I need this case closed. If you don't have the files by tomorrow night, extract yourself. We'll go in with heavy artillery."
The line went dead.
Nora looked up at Marco, panic flaring in her eyes. "He's coming here. He's using a police raid to execute you and destroy all the evidence you have against him."
Marco stood up, walking over to the window, staring out at the iron gates of his estate. A cold, dangerous smile touched his lips. "Let him come. He thinks he's bringing a storm to my doorstep, Detective. He doesn't realize I own the sky."

He turned back to her, extending his hand. "We have twenty-four hours to turn his raid into his execution—legally speaking, of course. I know you still want him behind bars, not in a grave."
Nora walked over, placing her hand firmly in his. "Let's take him down."
