Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Shadow

The Wednesday morning mystery finally unraveled four weeks into the operation.
Every Wednesday at exactly seven in the morning, Marco would vanish with his trusted driver, Vincent, returning precisely two hours and fifteen minutes later. Lieutenant Marsh was convinced it was a dead-drop location for illegal weapons or cartel money.
"We need a tracker on his vehicle, Nora," Marsh had ordered her during their covert meeting in a dingy diner on the edge of the city. "If we catch him handling the merchandise, we skip three years of grand jury nonsense and put him in a cage."
"He's heavily guarded, Lieutenant. Putting a tracker on his personal car is a massive risk," Nora argued, feeling an strange, unsettling defensiveness rising within her.
Marsh slammed his coffee cup down. "Losing Ruiz was a massive risk, Detective. Do your job."
The mention of her dead partner silenced her. With a heavy heart, Nora took the magnetic tracking device. The following Tuesday night, under the cover of a torrential downpour, she managed to slip into the underground garage of the Cavaliere estate while the security guards were changing shifts. Her heart pounded in her throat as she clicked the small black box onto the undercarriage of Marco's black sedan.
The next morning, Wednesday, she sat in the kitchen with her cleaning cloth, monitoring the tracker's signal via a encrypted application on her hidden burner phone.
The car moved across the city, leaving the affluent neighborhoods behind, heading deep into the impoverished, forgotten sectors of the East District. It stopped at a registered address: St. Jude’s Sanctuary for Children.
Nora frowned. A sanctuary? An orphanage?
She couldn't stay in the kitchen forever, so she excused herself to clean the master bedroom upstairs. As she wiped down the mahogany dressers, her curiosity consumed her. She knew Marco's private office was just across the hall. The door was always locked, but today, she noticed it was slightly ajar—a rare oversight by the security team.
Nora slipped inside, her pulse racing. This was her chance. She approached his massive desk, her eyes scanning the neat stacks of paper. Her hands trembled as she opened a leather-bound folder.
There were no ledgers of illegal weapons. There were no drug distribution manifests.
Instead, she found financial grants, architectural blueprints for building renovations, and medical funding receipts. Millions of dollars poured into St. Jude’s Sanctuary, funded entirely by Marco Cavaliere’s private, legitimate real estate holdings. He wasn't laundering money; he was completely financing an orphanage for children who had lost their parents to street violence.
Further down the stack, she found a personal correspondence file. Her breath caught in her throat. There were letters from Father Benedetto, detailing names of corrupt police officers—men on the city's payroll who were actively taking bribes from the real cartels to look the way.
And there, right at the bottom of the list, was a name that shattered Nora's entire world: Lieutenant Thomas Marsh.
Nora stumbled backward, the papers slipping from her hand onto the desk. Her mind spun in a chaotic vortex. The man who had sent her here, the man she trusted to avenge her partner, was the one on the take. Marco Cavaliere wasn't the criminal. He was the one trying to stop them.

"Looking for something, Carla?"
Nora spun around. Marco was standing in the doorway. He had returned early. The door closed behind him with a soft, ominous click, locking them together in the quiet sanctuary of his office.
