Chapter 8 - The Pieces Unravel

The aftermath of the raid was a whirlwind of legal proceedings, media storms, and structural collapse within the city's police department.

Lieutenant Marsh and seven other high-ranking officers were indicted on federal charges of corruption, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder. The evidence provided by Marco Cavaliere was ironclad, unassailable, and utterly devastating to the criminal underworld that had held the city in a chokehold for a decade.

Nora sat in a pristine interrogation room at the federal building, but this time, she wasn't the investigator. She was giving her final statement to the federal prosecutors, closing the chapter on her career as a police detective.

"Your testimony completely corroborates the Cavaliere files, Miss Vale," the federal prosecutor said, closing his folder with a satisfied click. "Because of your undercover work and Mr. Cavaliere’s cooperation, we’ve dismantled the most dangerous corrupt network this city has ever seen. You’re a hero."

"No," Nora said quietly, standing up and handing over her badge and her service weapon. "I was just doing what the badge was supposed to represent. I'm done."

As she walked out of the federal building, the bright afternoon sun hit her face. For the first time in three years, the heavy weight of guilt in her chest—the ghost of Danny Ruiz—was gone. She had fulfilled her promise. She had found justice.

A sleek, black sedan pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and Marco stepped out, dressed in a sharp, casual jacket, his dark eyes softening the moment they found her on the steps.

He didn't say a word. He simply extended his hand.

Nora didn't hesitate. She walked down the steps, placing her hand into his warm, calloused palm. The bandages were long gone, leaving only faint, faded scars on her skin—reminders of a time when she thought he was her enemy.

"Where to?" Marco asked as they stepped into the back seat, the car pulling away into the flowing traffic.

"Away from here," Nora smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Somewhere quiet."
