Chapter 7 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

Six months later, the corporate landscape of Manhattan had undergone a seismic shift. Garrett Holloway’s empire had crumbled like a sandcastle at high tide. Stripped of his assets, abandoned by his associates, and facing multiple life sentences for corruption, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder, Holloway was now sitting in a maximum-security federal penitentiary awaiting trial with no possibility of bail.
Vanguard Holdings had been dissolved, its remaining untainted assets seized and redirected into a legal aid and investigative foundation named in honor of Agent Caleb Cross—dedicated to protecting whistleblowers and undercover officers whose lives were endangered by corrupt corporate syndicates.
At the penthouse overlooking Central Park, the atmosphere was vastly different from the cold, clinical fortress it had been when Sienna first stepped inside. Sunlight poured through the massive glass windows, warming the hardwood floors and illuminating a room filled with life, books, and the quiet comfort of shared quietude.
Sienna sat at a large mahogany desk, reviewing a series of complex legal briefs for the foundation's latest slate of federal cases. The law degree she had put on hold two years ago was no longer a ghost of a past life; she had officially passed the New York Bar exam with honors three weeks prior, using her real name, her real history, and her hard-earned resilience.
The private elevator chime chimed softly, signaling an arrival.
Nico Reyes walked into the office, carrying a stack of courier envelopes and a steaming cup of dark roast coffee, which he placed gently on the corner of her desk.
"Federal prosecutor's office just confirmed," Nico said with a faint, satisfied smile. "Holloway's legal team filed another motion to dismiss based on health grounds. The judge threw it out in under two minutes. He's staying put."
"Good," Sienna said without looking up, though a small smile played at the corner of her lips. "He can spend the next thirty years contemplating the cost of stealing other people's lives."
"Mr. Vance will be home early," Nico added, turning toward the door. "He asked me to remind you that tonight is the foundation's inaugural charity gala at the Plaza, and he expects his lead legal counsel to actually wear the dress he had delivered yesterday."
May you like
Sienna laughed softly. "Tell him lead legal counsels have veto power over wardrobe choices, but I might make an exception."
Nico gave a crisp nod and exited the room, leaving her to the quiet rhythm of her work. She looked down at the documents bearing her actual name—Sienna Cross, Esq.—and felt a profound sense of peace settle deep into her bones. The storm had passed, leaving behind fertile ground.
