Chapter 2 - The Penthouse Offer

The interior of the Maybach was a sanctuary of dark wood, brushed aluminum, and the faint, expensive scent of leather and cedar. Sienna slid across the plush seat, maintaining an intentional distance from Damian Vance. He sat on the opposite side, the interior lighting casting long, sharp shadows across the planes of his face. He didn't speak immediately. He just watched her, his dark eyes assessing every micro-expression, searching for the crack in her composure that he was sure had to be there.
Nico closed the door from the outside, sealing them in absolute silence. The car glided away from the curb, merging into the glowing, neon-drenched grid of Manhattan traffic.
"You didn't blink," Damian said softly, breaking the stillness. His voice was a low baritone that seemed to vibrate in the confined space.
"Should I have?" Sienna asked, her tone entirely neutral, neither defensive nor servile. She turned her head to meet his gaze directly. "If I cried every time a man with more money than sense acted like a child, I wouldn't have survived my first week in this city."
Damian let out a dry, humorless sound that might have been a laugh. "Garrett Holloway isn't just a man with money. He's a predator. And he doesn't throw a plate of mousse at someone's face unless he feels threatened. Or unless he thinks they're looking at him with something more dangerous than curiosity."
Sienna's heart skipped a single, imperceptible beat, but her face remained carved stone. "He was drunk. And arrogant."
"He was cornered," Damian corrected quietly, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "And so are you, Sienna Cross. Or whatever name is on the birth certificate you burned before you took this job."
The air in the car grew thin. Sienna didn't flinch. She didn't deny it. "If you brought me here to talk about my paperwork, you wasted your gas. If you brought me here to threaten me, you're wasting your time."
"I don't threaten people," Damian said, his gaze intensifying. "I make investments. And right now, you're the most interesting anomaly in New York City. Ten months ago, a brilliant law student from Columbia vanishes into thin air. Six hours later, her brother, an undercover federal agent investigating Holloway's offshore slush funds, turns up dead in the Atlantic. And two weeks after that, a girl who looks like a ghost walks into my club and starts pouring drinks."
He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over her like a heavy blanket.
"You aren't a bartender, Sienna. You're a bomb with the timer ticking down. And Garrett Holloway is about to walk right into the blast radius."
"And you?" Sienna asked, her voice dropping an octave, razor-sharp. "What are you, Mr. Vance? Just an innocent bystander who happens to have a multi-million-dollar grudge against Holloway, or are you hoping to pick the bones clean after I finish the job?"
Damian smiled then—a genuine, dangerous smile that transformed his handsome face into something terrifying. "I'm the man who can give you the blueprint to the building you're trying to tear down with your bare hands. Holloway is moving fifty million dollars out of the country in seventy-two hours. Once that money clears, he's untouchable. You don't have seventy-two hours to play the long game as a bartender."
Sienna looked at him, her mind racing. Every calculation she had made over the last ten months shifted. She hadn't been invisible. She had been watched, cataloged, and understood by the most dangerous man in corporate New York.

"What do you want?" she asked.
"I want Holloway destroyed," Damian said, leaning back as the car pulled into the underground garage of a monolithic glass skyscraper. "And you want justice for your brother. I'd say our interests are aligned. Welcome to the partnership, Ms. Cross. Let's go up and review the files."
