Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of the Empire

The Federal StormThe federal government didn't move slowly when an entire judicial district was exposed as corrupt. Within forty-eight hours of Elara's automated leak, the Eastern District Prosecutor’s office had issued twenty-seven indictments.
Judge Arthur Sterling was arrested at his country club, still wearing his tennis whites. Councilman Vance was taken out of city hall in handcuffs.
The Cipriani organization found itself completely isolated. Their political protection vanished overnight, their assets frozen by federal judges scrambling to prove they weren't part of the conspiracy.

At The Redwoods, the mood was one of quiet victory. The guards were still alert, but the tension that had hung over the house for months had finally begun to dissipate.
Elara sat in the study, watching the news coverage on the television while Leo drew pictures of dinosaurs at the desk.
Lorenzo entered, carrying two glasses of red wine. He handed one to her and sat down on the sofa beside her.
"The prosecutor called," Lorenzo said, his eyes fixed on the television screen where Carmine Cipriani was being led into a federal courthouse. "They aren't looking at our shipping contracts anymore. They're too busy processing the Cipriani assets. You saved the family empire, Elara."
"I saved the city from a corrupt judge," she said, taking a sip of the wine. "The fact that it helped your business was just a side effect."
Lorenzo smiled, a soft, intimate expression she had never seen on him before. He reached out and covered her hand with his own. The platinum ring caught the light from the television.
"Is it still a cage?" he asked quietly.
Elara looked down at their joined hands, then at Leo, who was currently coloring a T-Rex with a bright green crayon.

"The lighting is still excellent," she murmured, looking back up into his eyes. "But the company has improved."
Lorenzo leaned in, his lips meeting hers in a kiss that was no longer about strategy, or contracts, or survival. It was slow, deep, and filled with the promise of something real built out of the ruins of a war they had won together.
