Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

The Attack on the RedwoodsInside the panic room, the sounds of the outside world were reduced to low, rhythmic thuds against the reinforced concrete walls. Elara sat on the floor with Leo, her back against the steel door, holding him tight while the monitors in the corner displayed live feeds from the estate’s security cameras.

On screen, three men in black tactical gear were moving through the rose garden, using smoke grenades to blind the automated turrets. Two Valente guards fell near the fountain, but before the attackers could reach the kitchen terrace, Lorenzo appeared on the monitor.

He moved with a terrifying, fluid efficiency. Two shots, perfectly placed, dropped the lead attacker. The second man turned, but Lorenzo was already inside his guard, throwing him against the stone wall before neutralizing him with a single blow.

The third attacker fled toward the south wall, but a security detail cut him off at the gate.

Within five minutes, the feeds went quiet. The smoke began to clear.

The panic room lock hissed, and the door swung open. Lorenzo stood there, his shirt torn at the shoulder, a smear of soot across his jaw, but otherwise unhurt.

"Are you okay?" Elara asked, stepping out with Leo.

"They didn't get past the terrace," Lorenzo said, taking Leo from her arms and kissing the boy's forehead. "But they didn't come to kill us. They came to distract us."

"What do you mean?"

Lorenzo held up a small black device his tech team had pulled from the lead attacker’s body. "It’s a high-frequency transmitter. While they were drawing our security to the south wall, someone inside the city grid overrode our firewalls. They downloaded the files we took from Marco’s phone."

Elara felt her stomach drop. "The evidence against Judge Sterling?"

"Everything," Lorenzo said. "The Cayman accounts, the signatures, the councilmen’s names. They’re purging the servers at the bank right now to destroy the trail."

Elara ran her fingers through her hair, her legal mind racing through the variables. "They think they won. They think if they delete the digital records, we have nothing."

"Do we?" Lorenzo asked.

Elara smiled, a cold, sharp expression that matched his own.

"They forgot I’m an old-school student, Lorenzo. I don't trust servers. Before we went to dinner at the Plaza, I printed three copies of the complete ledger, the signatures, and the transfer receipts. They're sitting in a safety deposit box at the public library in Queens under my foster mother's maiden name."

Lorenzo stared at her, then broke into a loud, booming laugh that echoed through the concrete hallway. "A safety deposit box? In a public library?"

"The mafia doesn't check libraries, Lorenzo," she said simply. "They don't think people who read books are dangerous. Let's go get our paperwork."
