Chapter 7 - Trial by Fire

The Queens RetrievalRetrieving the documents required a stealth operation that didn't involve armored SUVs or armed convoys. Elara insisted on taking a regular yellow cab into Queens, dressed in her old diner uniform—a faded blue polo and jeans—with Lorenzo sitting beside her in a plain gray hoodie that made him look like a construction worker on a rare day off.

The library was quiet, smelling of old paper and wet umbrellas. The elderly clerk behind the counter didn't look up when Elara signed the logbook.

Five minutes later, Elara held a thick brown envelope containing the hard copies of the evidence that could bring down the Cipriani empire.

As they walked out into the gray afternoon light, three black SUVs pulled up to the curb, blocking the street.

"Get inside," Lorenzo hissed, shoving her back through the library doors as the windows of the building shattered into thousands of crystal shards.

[Tactical Incident Report - Queens Public Library Branch]

- Threat Level: Maximum

- Hostiles: 8+ confirmed Cipriani operators

- Objective: Eliminate assets / Retrieve evidence

Lorenzo drew his weapon, firing three rapid shots through the broken glass to keep the attackers behind their vehicles. "They tracked the cab's GPS. We have less than three minutes before police response, and the Ciprianis own the local precinct."

"Follow me," Elara said, her local knowledge of Queens kicking in. She led him through the stacks, down to the basement where the old boiler room connected to an underground delivery tunnel that let out into the alleyway behind Joe’s Diner.

The tunnel was dark, dripping with condensation. They ran, Elara holding the envelope against her chest like a shield, her shoulder screaming with pain from the exertion.

They emerged into the rain behind the diner. The neon sign was still flickering: JOE'S ALL-NIGHT.

Standing in the alleyway was Don Carmine Cipriani himself.

He was an old man, wrapped in a heavy cashmere coat, flanked by four guards with submachine guns. He looked at Elara, then at Lorenzo, his expression one of bored amusement.

"Lorenzo," the old man said, his voice like dry autumn leaves. "You broke the rules. You brought a civilian into our business. You used the law to fight a war that belongs to the streets."

"The law is much cleaner than your family, Carmine," Lorenzo said, his gun pointed directly at the old man's chest despite the four weapons trained on him.

"Give me the envelope, girl," Carmine said, looking at Elara. "And maybe I let Lorenzo live long enough to watch his son grow up from a prison cell."

Elara stepped forward, stepping past Lorenzo’s protective arm. She looked at the old boss, her face devoid of fear.

"You're a very powerful man, Mr. Cipriani," she said, her voice clear despite the rain. "But you made one big mistake."

"And what’s that?"

"You thought I was Lorenzo's weakness. You thought if you threatened me, he would break. But the truth is, I’m not his hostage. I’m his counsel. And while you were waiting in this alley, the digital copies of these files were sent to the Eastern District Federal Prosecutor via an automated email delay script I set up two hours ago. The FBI is raiding Judge Sterling’s house right now."

As if on cue, the distant wail of federal sirens began to echo from the avenues, growing louder by the second.
