Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Ballroom

The Assembly of WolvesThe charity gala at the Plaza Hotel was supposed to be a demonstration of stability. In the underworld of New York high society, an attack on a Valente heir was a sign of blood in the water; this ballroom was Lorenzo’s way of showing the sharks he still owned the ocean.

Elara adjusted the midnight-blue gown. The silk hid the medical brace on her left shoulder perfectly, but nothing could hide the weight of the diamonds around her neck.

"Stay close, look at everyone, speak to no one unless I introduce them," Lorenzo had told her in the limousine.

Now, she stood at the head of the VIP table, the center of a hundred staring eyes. Marco Bellandi had just delivered his insult, his voice smooth enough to hide the venom from the casual observer.

“You were a waitress last week,” Marco’s words echoed in her mind. “Now you’re Mrs. Valente. Forgive us if we’re all curious whether this is romance… or the most expensive rescue mission in Manhattan.”

Elara didn't look at the crowd. She kept her eyes locked on Marco’s left hand.

The cufflink. Black enamel. Silver edge. The Cipriani crest.

[Observation Note: Target - Marco Bellandi]

- Position: Valente Underboss / Internal Financial Director

- Anomaly: Wearing a customized Cipriani-affiliated crest cufflink at a public Valente event.

- Implication: Collusion / High-level betrayal.

"Marco," Elara said, her voice cut through the ambient noise of the ballroom with chilled precision. "I spent years serving men who thought a table made them important. You’d be surprised how often the people carrying coffee are the only ones in the room paying attention."

Marco’s smile stiffened. "Is that so, Mrs. Valente? And what exactly does a waitress pay attention to?"

"The details," Elara replied, taking a slow sip of her water. "For instance, I noticed that you favor your left leg slightly when you walk—likely a lower back issue from spending too many hours in armored cars. And I noticed that your tailor uses a double-stitch on your lapels to hide the bulk of a secondary phone pocket."

She paused, letting the silence grow heavy.

"But most interesting of all, I noticed your choice of accessories tonight. The Cipriani family crest is beautiful, Marco. But usually, an underboss waits until after the coup is finished before he starts wearing the enemy's uniform to his employer's dinner table."

A collective intake of breath rippled across the surrounding tables. Lorenzo didn't move a muscle, but his grip on his champagne glass tightened until the crystal groaned.

The Counter-MoveMarco’s face flushed an ugly, dark red. He opened his mouth to speak, but Lorenzo stepped forward, his massive frame cutting off Marco’s line of sight to Elara.

"Marco," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into that quiet, terrifying register that made even the waiters across the room freeze. "My wife is new to our circle, but her eyes are exceptional. Why don't we go to the library upstairs and discuss your... jewelry choices?"

"Lorenzo, this is absurd," Marco hissed, his eyes darting toward the exits. "The girl is delusional. It's a vintage piece I bought at an auction—"

"Now," Lorenzo commanded.

Two Valente security guards appeared from the shadows behind Marco’s chair, their hands resting flat against their jackets. Marco looked around the room, realizing none of his own men were within twenty feet. The trap had been sprung, not by a seasoned captain, but by a woman who used to clear his dishes.

As they led Marco away, Lorenzo turned to Elara. There was a strange look in his eyes—a mixture of cold fury and something dangerously close to respect.

"You shouldn't have done that here," he whispered.

"If I didn't, he would have left through the kitchen before the dessert course," Elara said, her heart hammering against her ribs despite her calm exterior. "He knew you were closing in. He was going to jump tonight."

Lorenzo looked at her for a long three seconds. "Get to the car. We’re going back to the estate. The war just started."
