Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Friday, 2:00 PM. The grand glass-walled boardroom on the top floor of Hale Enterprises was packed to capacity. Cameras flashed relentlessly as news reporters lined the back perimeter of the room. The board members sat around the grand mahogany table, their expressions somber and tense.
Julian Hale stood at the head of the table, wearing a bespoke double-breasted suit, oozing absolute confidence.
He cleared his throat, stepping up to the podium set up for the press.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the board, members of the press,” Julian began, adopting a solemn, sorrowful tone. “Today is a tragic day for Hale Enterprises. My beloved brother, Victor, remains in a critical, non-responsive coma following his horrific accident. The doctors hold little hope for his recovery.”
A few reporters snapped photos as Julian wiped an imaginary tear from his eye.
“However,” Julian continued, raising his voice with practiced authority, “Victor built an empire that employs tens of thousands of people. We cannot allow his vision to crumble. Therefore, as his legal proxy and next-of-kin, I am formally assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer of Hale Enterprises, effective immediately.”
“I wouldn't sign that decree just yet, Julian.”
The voice echoed through the high-grade speakers of the boardroom, clear, sharp, and terrifyingly familiar.
The entire room went dead silent. The camera flashes stopped instantly.
Julian froze, his hands gripping the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white. His face drained of all color. “What… what is this?” he stammered, looking around frantically. “Who played that audio?”
The heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom swung wide open.
Two burly security guards stepped aside, framing the towering figure who stepped into the room.
Victor Hale walked in.
He was dressed in an immaculate black suit, his posture impeccably straight, his sharp jawline set in stone. The small bandage on his head looked less like an injury and more like a battle mark. Beside him walked two officers from the Federal Financial Crimes Unit and the District Attorney.
Gasps erupted across the room. Reporters instantly exploded into a frenzy of camera flashes and shouting.
“It’s Victor Hale!” “He’s alive!” “Mr. Hale, over here!”
Julian stumbled backward against the glass wall, his eyes wide with sheer horror and utter disbelief. “Victor? No… no, this is impossible! You’re in a coma! You were paralyzed!”
Victor walked down the central aisle, his eyes locked onto his brother like an apex predator stalking its cornered prey. He stopped at the head of the table, right in front of Julian.
“I was never paralyzed, Julian,” Victor said, his voice carrying clearly over the noisy room. “And I was never in a coma.”
“You… you lied?” Julian whispered, panic cracking his voice. “You faked it? Why?!”
“Because I wanted to see who would stand by my family when I was down,” Victor said coldly, stepping closer until he towered over his younger brother. “And I wanted to see how fast a vulture would start picking at my bones.”
Victor turned to the board members and the cameras. He raised his hand, and Marcus Vance stepped forward, plugging a USB drive into the boardroom’s main media projector.
Instantly, the massive wall screens displayed dozens of financial spreadsheets, showing illegal wire transfers to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—all bearing Julian’s forged signature of Victor’s name.
“For six months, Julian has been systematically embezzling funds from Hale Enterprises,” Victor declared loudly. “And when he was caught by my children’s nanny, Amelia Brooks, he threatened her. He threatened to use corrupt legal channels to tear my children away from their home to keep her silent.”
The room gasped in collective horror. The reporters recorded every single word.
“That’s a lie!” Julian shrieked, his voice high-pitched and hysterical. “He’s insane! The fall damaged his brain! Officer, arrest him! He’s crazy!”
The senior Detective from the Financial Crimes Unit stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
“Julian Hale,” the Detective stated coldly, “you are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, forgery, and felony extortion. You have the right to remain silent.”
As the steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists, Victor leaned in close to his brother’s ear, echoing the exact words Julian had whispered to him while he lay on the cold foyer floor:
May you like
“I hope you like dark places, brother. Because you’re never coming back from this one.”
Julian was dragged out of the boardroom, sobbing and screaming, as the press recorded his utter humiliation for the entire world to see.
