Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary at Monterey

The coastal air in Monterey was cool and smelled of salt and wild pine. The ocean waves crashed violently against the jagged cliffs below the private estate, a striking contrast to the absolute tranquility inside the house.

Amelia sat on the plush rug in the sunlit living room, holding a wooden block while Evan meticulously stacked another on top of it. Nora was curled up on Amelia’s lap, clutching her little wooden horse, her eyelashes fluttering as she drifted off to sleep.

Despite the serene environment, Amelia’s heart was in turmoil.

When Marcus Vance’s security team had arrived at the mansion before dawn and instructed her to pack the kids' belongings, she had been terrified that Julian had initiated his threat. But Marcus had gently assured her that this was on "direct orders from the executive trustee," assuring her that the children would be entirely safe.

Still, no one was giving her updates on Victor. The hospital had placed a total media blackout on his condition. The news broadcasts merely speculated that the billionaire titan was on "life support."

A tear dripped onto Amelia’s hand. She wiped it away quickly so Evan wouldn't see.

“Dada?” Evan asked suddenly, looking up with big, innocent brown eyes, holding a blue wooden block mid-air. “Dada home?”

Amelia’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. She pulled Evan into a tight hug, burying her face in his soft hair. “Dada is fighting very hard right now, sweetie,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “He’s trying so hard to come back to you.”

“He doesn’t have to fight anymore.”

Amelia froze.

The voice came from the open glass doors leading out to the ocean terrace. It wasn't a doctor. It wasn't Marcus. It was deep, resonant, and unmistakably real.

She turned slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Standing in the doorway, framed by the bright golden light of the afternoon sun, was Victor Hale.

He wasn't in a hospital gown. He wasn't on life support. He was standing tall, dressed in a soft navy cashmere sweater and dark jeans. His dark hair was slightly messy, and a small, discrete bandage rested on the left side of his head, but his eyes—those fierce, piercing dark eyes—were completely clear and focused entirely on her.

Amelia stood up so fast she nearly tripped over the toy blocks. She stared at him, her mouth open, tears welling instantly in her eyes.

“Victor?” she gasped, afraid that if she blinked, he would vanish like a phantom. “You’re… you’re awake? How… when?”

Victor walked across the room, his stride long and purposeful. He didn't look at the luxurious ocean view. He didn't check his phone. He looked only at Amelia.

He stopped just two feet away from her. Without saying a word, he reached out and gently laid his hand against her cheek, his thumb softly wiping away a fresh tear.

“I was never asleep, Amelia,” he said quietly, his voice filled with a tenderness she had never heard from him before.

Amelia blinked, utterly confused. “What do you mean?”

“When I fell down those stairs,” Victor explained softly, his eyes searching hers, “I was conscious the entire time. I faked being knocked out.”

Amelia gasped, taking a step back in shock, her hands flying to her mouth. “You… you faked it? Why?! I was terrified! The babies were screaming! I thought you were dying!”

“I know,” Victor said, taking a step forward to close the distance, refusing to let her go. “And I am so deeply, unforgivably sorry for putting you through that horror. But when I lay on that floor, listening to you cry… listening to you plead for my life… I realized something that shattered me to my core.”

He took her hands in his, wrapping his large, warm fingers firmly around hers.

“I realized that for two years, I have been a ghost in my own home,” Victor confessed, his voice thick with raw emotion. “I thought providing money was enough. I thought keeping this family wealthy was my duty. But while I was out chasing power, you were the one holding my children when they cried. You were the one giving them a home. And then… I heard what you whispered to me.”

Amelia’s breath caught in her throat. Her face flushed bright red as the realization hit her like a thunderbolt.

“Mr. Hale… please… I need you.” “I think I’ve fallen in love with you, too.”

She tried to pull her hands away in sheer embarrassment, her heart wildly racing. “You… you heard that?”

“I heard every single word,” Victor whispered, refusing to release her hands. He pulled her closer until there was no space left between them. “I heard what Julian threatened you with. I heard how you stood up to him to protect my children. And I heard what you feel for me.”

Amelia looked down, tears cascading down her cheeks. “Victor, I’m sorry… I shouldn't have said those things. I’m just the nanny. I didn't mean to cross a line—”

“Amelia, look at me,” Victor commanded softly, but with absolute authority.

She raised her eyes to meet his.

“You are not 'just the nanny,'” Victor said, his voice trembling with a sincerity that made her breath hitch. “You are the heart of this family. You saved my kids. You saved me from remaining a cold, unfeeling shell of a man. And if you’ll let me… I want to spend the rest of my life proving to you that those feelings aren't one-sided.”

Amelia stared at him, her lips parting in disbelief. “You… you love me?”

May you like

“With every single beat of my heart,” Victor answered softly.

Before she could process the words, Victor pulled her into his arms and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, desperate, and fiercely loving kiss.
