Chapter 2 - The Shadows of Betrayal

The words hung in the chilly foyer, heavier than the cold marble beneath Victor’s rigid body. Julian. His younger brother, the polished executive he had trusted to handle the domestic side of Hale Enterprises while Victor expanded globally. Victor forced his muscles to stay entirely slack, keeping his breathing shallow and faint, even as a tempest raged behind his closed eyelids.

Amelia was shaking. He could feel her hand resting lightly on his sternum, her fingers fluttering like trapped birds. She scrambled for her phone with her free hand, dialing emergency services with frantic, unsteady taps.

“Operator? Yes, please send an ambulance!” her voice cracked, high and desperate. “It’s Mr. Victor Hale. He fell down the grand staircase at the estate. He’s unresponsive, but he has a pulse. Please, hurry!”

While she gave the address to the dispatcher, the heavy oak front doors clicked open. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the high-ceilinged foyer.

“What on earth is going on here?” a suave, smooth voice called out.

Julian Hale walked in, coat draped casually over his arm, holding a leather briefcase. He stopped dead in his tracks, looking down at Victor’s body, then at Amelia and the sobbing toddlers. For a split second, Victor wished he could open his eyes to catch the exact expression on his brother’s face. But he remained frozen, listening to the subtle nuances of tone.

“Julian!” Amelia gasped, wiping her tear-stained face. “He fell. I heard a crash and found him here. The paramedics are on their way.”

Julian didn't rush forward. He didn't drop his briefcase. He took a slow, deliberate breath, walking over to stand right above Victor. Victor could feel the phantom weight of Julian’s gaze analyzing him like a piece of depreciated machinery.

“Is he breathing?” Julian asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

“Yes, but he won't wake up!” Amelia pleaded, reaching out toward him. “Julian, please hold Evan for a second so I can check his breathing again.”

“Don't touch him, Amelia,” Julian snapped, a cold edge entering his voice that Victor had never heard him use before. “If he’s spinal-injured, moving him will kill him. Or paralyze him permanently.” Julian paused, letting the word sink in. Paralyzed.

“I didn't move his spine, I just checked his pulse,” Amelia whispered, shrinking back slightly, pulling the twins closer to her chest. Evan buried his face in the crook of her neck, his tiny body trembling.

Julian stepped closer to Amelia, leaning down until his shadow completely eclipsed her. “Remember what we talked about yesterday, Amelia,” Julian murmured softly, his tone dripping with quiet menace. “Victor’s empire is hanging by a thread. If he’s out of the picture, I take control of the board. You keep your mouth shut about those financial transfers, or I’ll have social services declare you an unfit nanny and remove those children from this house before the sun sets today.”

Victor’s heart hammered furiously against his ribs. He had to exert every ounce of his formidable willpower not to leap off the floor and wrap his hands around his brother’s throat. Julian was threatening Amelia. Julian was stealing from the company. And worse, Julian was using his motherless children as leverage to terrorize a woman who gave them everything.

Amelia flinched, but she stood her ground. “You’re a monster, Julian. He’s your brother.”

“He’s an arrogant tyrant who spent three years treating me like a glorified secretary,” Julian sneered under his breath. “And look at him now. Master of the universe, lying in his own dust.”

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as the emergency vehicles turned into the long, gated driveway. Julian immediately shifted his posture, his voice altering instantly to sound horrified and frantic.

“Hold on, Vic! Help is here!” Julian shouted, putting on a grand performance for the benefit of the approaching paramedics. He dropped to his knees, pretending to adjust Victor’s posture while whispering in his ear, “I hope you never wake up, brother.”

Victor kept his eyelids locked shut, but inside, a dark, unstoppable fire was ignited. He wasn't just going to wake up; he was going to dismantle Julian Hale piece by piece.
