Part 9: The Crown of the Empire

The private cathedral on the Moretti estate grounds was packed to capacity. Sunlight poured through towering stained-glass windows, casting vibrant hues of sapphire and ruby across the polished marble aisles. As the heavy wooden doors swung open and the wedding march began to play, every head in the cathedral turned in unison.

Holding Emma’s small, warm hand in my left, and resting my right hand gently on my father’s arm—whom Damiano had flown in first-class from a quiet retirement home in Florida—I began the slow walk down the aisle.

At the altar stood Damiano. In a bespoke black tuxedo with a white rose pinned to his lapel, he looked every bit the ruthless mafia kingpin he was. But as his dark eyes locked onto mine, all the cold menace vanished, replaced by an expression of profound, unshakable devotion.

When we reached the altar, my father gently placed my hand into Damiano’s. Damiano squeezed my fingers reassuringly, leaning down to whisper, “You take my breath away, Sophia.”

The ceremony was a blur of ancient vows, solemn promises, and overwhelming emotion. When the priest finally pronounced us husband and wife, and Damiano lifted my veil to press a deep, passionate kiss to my lips, the entire cathedral erupted into thunderous applause.

The reception that followed in the grand ballroom was an explosion of luxury and celebration. Champagne flowed endlessly, a world-class orchestra played soft jazz, and the elite figures of the East Coast underworld mingled seamlessly with our closest friends and family.

During the reception, Damiano stood up, tapping a crystal glass with a silver spoon to catch everyone's attention. The room fell instantly quiet.

Damiano pulled me close against his side, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, while Emma sat happily on a high chair beside us, happily eating a golden macaron.

“Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate the most important day of my life,” Damiano began, his rich voice echoing across the ballroom. “People often ask how an empire is built. They talk about power, territory, and strategy. But tonight, I want to tell you the truth. An empire is built on loyalty, on courage, and on unexpected blessings.”

He looked down at Emma, then turned his gaze directly to me, his dark eyes shining with raw emotion.

“Six months ago, a little girl walked into my office with a rag doll and saved my life, exposing a traitor who sought to tear our world apart. And her mother brought light and warmth into a life that had only known shadows. Today, I am not just the most powerful boss in New York. I am the luckiest man alive. To Sophia and Emma—my heart, my family, my legacy. Welcome home.”

The applause that followed was deafening. Syndicate bosses, hardened killers, and society elites rose to their feet, cheering and raising their glasses in a unanimous salute.
