Part 8: A New Reality

The weeks that followed the fateful peace summit transformed my life into something resembling a surreal dream sequence. The cramped, drafty apartment in Queens was replaced by the sprawling, heavily guarded Moretti estate on the Hudson River—a magnificent limestone mansion surrounded by manicured gardens, towering wrought-iron gates, and a permanent detail of armed security.
Transitioning from a struggling single mother working double catering shifts to the fiancée of New York’s most feared crime lord was dizzying. At first, the staff whispered behind my back, viewing me as an opportunistic outsider who had miraculously struck gold. But that skepticism dissolved the moment Emma accidentally left her rag doll in the formal dining hall, and Damiano himself personally carried it upstairs to her room, delaying a high-level financial meeting with the Chicago syndicate to read her a bedtime story.
The underworld learned very quickly that touching a single hair on Emma’s head was a one-way ticket to a shallow grave.
Elena Vance’s trial before the commission was swift and absolute. Stripped of her status and financial holdings, she was permanently exiled to a remote European estate under perpetual surveillance, her network dismantled piece by piece. Victor Vance, deeply ashamed of his niece's treachery, formally ceded several lucrative shipping lanes to the Moretti family as a gesture of enduring peace and reparations.
By autumn, the wedding preparations were underway on a scale that stunned New York society. It was billed as the social event of the decade, though the guest list comprised elite billionaires, politicians, and syndicate bosses from across the globe.
On the morning of the wedding, the bridal suite of the estate was a flurry of activity. Stylists, tailors, and makeup artists buzzed around the room like bees. I stood before the tall antique mirror, staring at my reflection in absolute disbelief. The woman looking back wore a breathtaking haute couture wedding gown of Italian silk and Chantilly lace, glittering with delicate crystal embroidery.
The heavy diamond signet ring Damiano had slipped onto my finger in the war room now rested alongside a stunning custom engagement ring featuring a massive flawless center diamond.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Emma tumbled into the room, dressed like a tiny princess in a matching ivory silk flower-girl dress, clutching her trusty rag doll—which now wore a miniature silk bow tie that Damiano had custom-ordered for it.
“Mommy! You look like a queen!” Emma gasped, her eyes wide with awe.
I knelt down, sweeping her into a tight hug, tears prickling at the corners of my eyes. “How do you feel, sweetheart?”
“I love our new house, Mommy,” Emma whispered happily. “And Daddy Damiano says we’re going to Disney World next week!”

A soft knock interrupted us. Marcus stood in the doorway, looking sharp in a tailored tuxedo, a polite, respectful smile on his usually grim face.
“Mrs. Moretti-to-be,” Marcus said respectfully. “The car is waiting. The groom is getting impatient.”
