Part 2: The Sound of Silence

The heavy oak door of the private study clicked shut, sealing Damiano Moretti inside with whatever nightmare lay beneath his mahogany desk. In the hallway, the remaining security guards stood frozen, their hands hovering over the suppressed weapons hidden beneath their bespoke jackets. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and expensive cologne, a jarring contrast to the cold dread settling in my chest.
“Sophia. Move. Now,” growled Marcus, Damiano’s chief of security. His face was carved from granite, his eyes darting toward the grand staircase where the advance security detail for the visiting dons was already taking positions.
I didn't hesitate. I scooped Emma up into my arms, burying her face against my shoulder so she couldn't see the frantic movements of the armed men. Her little body trembled, her fingers clutching the threadbare rag doll so tightly her knuckles turned white. I rushed down the dimly lit corridor toward the west parlor, my heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor.
The west parlor was a sanctuary of velvet and antique gold, usually reserved for quiet diplomacy or private grief. I hurried inside, pulled the heavy mahogany doors shut, and threw the brass deadbolt. The lock slid home with a heavy, satisfying thud.
“Mommy, is the bad man going to find us?” Emma whispered, her big blue eyes welling with tears.
“No, sweetheart. We’re safe here. Nobody is going to hurt us,” I lied, pulling her down onto a plush velvet settee. My voice shook, betraying the absolute terror clawing at my throat.
Outside, the silence of the mansion was suddenly shattered by a muffled, concussive thud that vibrated through the floorboards. It wasn't a loud explosion—it was engineered, precise, designed to be contained within a single reinforced room. The air pressure in the parlor shifted, popping our ears.
Emma whimpered, burying her face in my lap. I wrapped my arms around her, staring fixedly at the door. Had Damiano cleared the room in time? Or had the trap sprung, wiping out the most powerful syndicate leaders in the country along with the man who ruled them all?
Minutes ticked by like hours. Every shadow in the room seemed to stretch and twist into menacing shapes. I thought about my life before this night—a quiet, struggling single mother working double shifts as a catering server just to keep us in a cramped, drafty apartment in Queens. I had thought working the Moretti estate tonight was our big break, a chance to make triple wages for a single evening of serving champagne to monsters. Instead, we had walked straight into a viper's nest.
Then, footsteps approached the parlor door. Heavy, measured, purposeful.
Click.

The brass handle turned.
I braced myself, pulling Emma further behind me, my eyes locked on the opening door as Damiano Moretti stepped into the light.
