Part 10: Forever Safe

Five years later, the Moretti estate was no longer just a fortress of fear and criminal power; it was a home filled with life, laughter, and unconditional love.
The winter snow fell softly outside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the main living room, blanketing the Hudson River landscape in a pristine layer of white. Inside, a roaring fire crackled in the grand stone fireplace, casting a warm, golden glow across the room.
Emma, now an eleven-year-old middle schooler with top grades and an adventurous spirit, sat cross-legged on the plush rug, helping her three-year-old brother—our new addition, Leo—build a towering castle out of wooden blocks.
I sat curled up on the oversized velvet sofa, a mug of hot chamomile tea steaming in my hands, watching the scene with a heart full of profound gratitude.
The front door opened, and a rush of cold winter air swept through the foyer as Damiano stepped inside, shaking the snow from his heavy wool overcoat. He unbuttoned his jacket, loosened his silk tie, and strode into the living room, his tall frame instantly radiating warmth and comfort.
He didn't head for his private study. He walked straight over to the sofa, leaning down to press a tender kiss to my lips before scooping little Leo up into his arms, tossing him gently into the air as the toddler squealed with delighted laughter.
“How was the council meeting?” I asked, smiling as I adjusted the collar of Damiano’s shirt.
“Peaceful,” Damiano replied, sitting down beside me and pulling me into his strong embrace, resting his chin softly on top of my head. “The Chicago and Boston outfits ratified the new shipping agreements without a single argument. Everybody knows better than to test the Moretti family.”
Emma looked up from her block castle, a mischievous grin lighting up her face. “Dad, do you remember when I first met you in your office and told you to look under your desk?”
Damiano chuckled, a deep, resonant sound, wrapping his free arm around Emma as well, pulling both of us close against his chest.

“How could I ever forget?” Damiano murmured, pressing a kiss to Emma’s forehead. “That was the exact moment my life truly began.”
We sat together in front of the roaring fire, the winter storm howling harmlessly outside the reinforced glass. The danger, the blood, and the dark secrets of the underworld felt a million miles away. We had found our safe haven in the most unlikely place imaginable—bound together by a brave little girl, a blinking red light, and a love that had conquered a war.
