Part 5: The Accusation

Silence fell over the boardroom—a suffocating, absolute stillness where even the hum of the ventilation system seemed to die.
Elena Vance did not flinch immediately. She slowly lowered her crystal water glass back onto the table, the crystal clinking against the polished wood with a sharp, echoing sound. A thin, cold smile touched her red lips as she met Damiano’s burning gaze.
“An adorable little act, Damiano,” Elena said, her voice smooth, dripping with practiced aristocratic disdain. “You brought a peasant child in here to point fingers at me? What is this? Some crude theatrical display to renegotiate the shipping percentages?”
“It is no act, Elena,” Damiano said, his voice deadly quiet. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object—a scorched, partially melted circuit board with a faint, charred red light housing. He tossed it casually onto the center of the walnut table. It skidded across the wood and came to a rest right in front of Victor Vance.
Victor looked down at the device, his weathered face instantly turning pale. He knew what a kinetic charge looked like.
“That,” Damiano said, his eyes locking onto Elena, “was wired directly beneath my seat. It was programmed to detonate the moment the master signature protocol for our treaty was initiated. It would have leveled this entire floor, eliminating every head of the commission in one clean stroke.”
Victor slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the crystal decanters. “Elena! Is this true? You planted a bomb at the summit?”
“Uncle, don't be a fool,” Elena snapped, her composure finally cracking as a sharp edge of panic pierced her voice. She stood up, smoothing her emerald gown. “Look at the source! A mafia boss and a common cleaning woman with a brat child concocted a ridiculous fairy tale to frame me! They want control of the North Atlantic ports, and eliminating me is the easiest way to break the Chicago-New York alliance!”
“She’s lying!” Emma suddenly piped up, her voice ringing out bravely in the cavernous room. She stepped forward, pointing an accusing finger again. “I saw her! She gave the man with the sad eyes a shiny gold coin outside the study, and she told him that if he didn't press the button, her uncle would find out about his sister in Budapest!”
The color drained entirely from Elena’s face. The mention of Budapest was a detail no outsider could possibly know—a private leverage point Elena used to control her personal fixers.
Victor Vance froze, staring at his niece with absolute horror and betrayal in his eyes. “Budapest... Good God, Elena. You used Marcus’s sister?”
Elena stumbled backward, her heels catching the edge of her chair. The mask of aristocratic perfection shattered completely, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath. She lunged for her designer handbag resting on the chair, her hand diving inside with lightning speed.
“Look out!” I screamed, instinctively throwing myself in front of Emma.

Before Elena’s fingers could even wrap around the grip of the pearl-handled revolver hidden in her bag, two shots rang out in rapid succession—not from Damiano, but from Marcus and the security detail flanking the door.
The bullets punched through the table and the arm of Elena’s chair with terrifying accuracy. Elena cried out as a round grazed her shoulder, spinning her around before she collapsed heavily onto the Persian rug, clutching her arm as dark crimson blood began to pool across the emerald silk of her dress.
