Part 4: Entering the Lion's Den

The grand mahogany double doors of the main conference hall loomed ahead like the gates of an ancient fortress. Two elite guards stood at attention, their expressions carved from stone. As Damiano approached, they pushed the heavy doors open with synchronized precision, revealing a scene of staggering opulence and palpable tension.

Inside, a massive oval table crafted from polished walnut dominated the center of the room. Seated around it were the five most powerful syndicate leaders on the East Coast: Victor Vance of the Chicago outfit, Salvatore Rossi representing the Philadelphia families, Donato Falcone of Boston, Vincent "The Razor" Marcone from New Jersey, and sitting quietly near the far end, Elena Vance—Victor’s stunning, impeccably dressed niece and head of financial logistics.

As Damiano walked in, all five dons rose from their high-backed leather chairs. Their eyes immediately locked onto Damiano, searching for any sign of weakness or hesitation. They expected him to look shaken. They expected him to be late.

Instead, Damiano walked in with absolute, unyielding authority, his stride steady and predatory. And trailing just a step behind him, clutching my hand while holding her rag doll in the other, were Emma and me.

A murmur rippled through the room. Victor Vance frowned, leaning heavily on his gold-handled cane, his white mustache twitching with irritation.

“Damiano,” Victor rasped, his voice like gravel grinding together. “We are busy men. What is the meaning of this delay? And why in God's name are there civilians—and a child—in the war room?”

Damiano did not immediately answer. He walked to the head of the table, pulling out his chair, but he did not sit. Instead, he rested both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning forward slightly as his dark gaze swept slowly across the faces of his peers.

“Gentlemen,” Damiano began, his voice echoing in the vast, high-ceilinged room. “Forgive the slight disarray. We had a minor technical malfunction in my private study just moments before you arrived. A structural integrity issue, shall we say.”

Salvatore Rossi squinted, crossing his arms over his broad chest. “An issue? Moretti, we didn't come here to listen to complaints about your real estate. We came to sign the territory pacts. Where is the documentation?”

“The documentation is safe,” Damiano replied smoothly, though his eyes flicked briefly toward Elena Vance. Elena sat motionless, her posture rigid, a diamond necklace glittering against the emerald silk of her designer gown. Her face was a mask of perfect, icy composure, but I noticed a slight, almost imperceptible tremor in the hand holding her crystal water glass.

“Before we sign anything,” Damiano continued, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal weight that commanded absolute silence, “we have a special guest who needs to verify something for us. Emma, honey, come here.”

He gestured gently. I nudged Emma forward, keeping my hand securely on her shoulder. She stepped out into the open space of the boardroom, tiny and vulnerable against the backdrop of towering mafia lords.

“Emma,” Damiano asked, his tone softening just enough for her to feel safe. “Do you see the lady you told me about earlier? The one who was talking to the man with the sad eyes near my desk?”

Emma’s wide blue eyes scanned the room. She looked at Victor Vance, then at Salvatore Rossi, her small brow furrowing in concentration. Then, slowly, she raised a small, trembling finger and pointed directly across the table.

Every head in the room whipped around to follow the line of her finger.

Emma was pointing straight at Elena Vance.
