Chapter 9 - The First Birthday

A year flew by, and the day arrived for a joint first-birthday celebration. The Bennett backyard was transformed into a wonderland of pink and gold balloons, with two identical smash cakes sitting on the highchair trays.

Family and friends filled the yard, including Nurse Sarah from St. Anne’s, who had become a close friend of the families after that fateful night.

When it came time to blow out the candles, Daniel stood behind Noah, placing his hands on his son's shoulders—but this time, his grip was light, warm, and filled with nothing but pride.

“Make a wish, big guy,” Daniel whispered.

Noah looked at his little sister Emma, who was covered in blue frosting, and then at Faith, who was happily clapping her frosting-covered hands. He smiled up at his dad. “I don't need to wish for anything. It’s already perfect.”

As the guests cheered and the babies dug into their cakes, Julia Miller brought a beautifully framed photograph over to Claire and Daniel. It was a picture taken in the hospital just a few weeks after the surgeries—a close-up of Emma and Faith’s tiny feet, still wearing their correct, unbroken identification bands.

Beneath the photo, a silver plaque read: “The truth sets us free, but love holds us together.”
