The next forty-eight hours were a whirlwind of legalities and emotional upheaval. Because Daniel had not actually left the hospital premises with the child, and because of the highly unusual, tragic circumstances, the district attorney was hesitant to push for maximum kidnapping charges. However, Daniel remained held on high bail for child endangerment and trespassing.
Claire refused to let the family fall apart. Despite just having major surgery, she mobilized her family’s legal team to defend Daniel. She didn't condone what he did, but she understood the brokenness that drove him to it.
Meanwhile, the story had leaked within the hospital. The Millers—Mark and Julia—were terrified. They had brought their fragile adopted daughter home, but Daniel’s confession hung over them. It was true: they were facing financial ruin. The baby, whom they had named Faith, desperately needed a specialized arterial switch surgery within her first month of life, and their insurance company had just denied the pre-authorization, claiming it was a pre-existing condition of the biological surrogate.
Noah couldn't stop thinking about Baby Faith. He sat in the living room of their home, staring at the empty bassinet they had set up for Emma. Emma was sleeping peacefully in the crib upstairs, but the house felt haunted by the tragedy.

“Claire?” Noah asked one afternoon as she poured him some juice. “If Dad wanted to save Faith, does that mean Faith is going to die now because I stopped him?”
Claire stopped, her heart breaking for the guilt her stepson was carrying. She sat down next to him. “No, Noah. Absolutely not. Your dad tried to solve a problem with a lie. But lies never fix anything permanently. We are going to find a way to help Faith with the truth.”
