Chapter 3 - The Confession

In the private consultation room, the air was thick with tension. Dr. Harrison, the chief of pediatrics, sat across from Daniel, alongside a local police detective named Vance. Noah was allowed to sit in the corner with Elena, clutching a fresh box of juice he couldn't bring himself to drink.

“Daniel,” Detective Vance said, leaning forward. “The hospital records show you had access to the nursery bypass codes because of your old maintenance job. You planned this. We need to know why before we file formal kidnapping charges.”

Daniel sat with his head buried in his hands. When he finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot and filled with an ancient, exhausting grief. He didn't look at the detective; he looked at Noah.

“I didn't want to hurt Emma,” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. “And I didn't want to hurt Claire. I love them.”

“Then why did you swap the bands, Daniel?” Dr. Harrison asked gently.

Daniel took a deep, shuddering breath. “Because of the Miller baby. She isn't just any baby. Seven months ago, my sister, Sarah, passed away in an accident. Before she died, she was a surrogate. The couple she carried for... they abandoned the contract when they found out the baby might have a congenital heart defect. Sarah died trying to bring that child into the world. The baby was given up for adoption, and the Millers adopted her pre-natally.”

The room went completely silent.

“I’ve been tracking the pregnancy,” Daniel confessed, tears finally streaming down his face. “When I saw the Millers bring her in tonight, I found out from a former coworker that the Millers' insurance won't cover the advanced cardiac surgeries she needs. They are drowning in debt, and they were talking about putting her back into the foster system because they can't afford her care.”

Daniel looked down at his trembling hands. “My wife, Claire... her family is incredibly wealthy. Our insurance is top-tier, and Claire’s father has a medical trust fund set up for our newborn. I thought... I thought if I switched them, Sarah’s baby would get the surgeries she needs to live. She would have everything. And Emma... Emma is perfectly healthy. I knew the Millers would love her, and she would be safe. I didn't do it because I didn't want Emma. I did it to save my sister’s child.”

Noah listened, the weight of the truth crashing down on him. His father didn't hate Emma. He was just desperately, foolishly trying to play God to save a dying baby.
