Chapter 2 - The Shadows of St. Anne’s

The heavy steel doors of the maternity ward clicked shut with an ominous, echoing thud. Within seconds, two security guards appeared from the stairwell, their expressions grim. Daniel Bennett didn't fight. As the guards approached, he let go of Noah’s shoulder, his hands dropping to his sides in absolute defeat.
“Daniel Bennett?” one of the guards asked, recognizing him from his years working in the hospital’s maintenance department. “We need you to step away from the window and come with us.”
Noah stood frozen as his father was led toward a small consultation room down the hall. The ten-year-old was left standing alone outside the nursery glass, his heart hammering against his ribs. Through the glass, the nurse—whose nametag read Sarah—was gently cradle-rocking the real Emma Bennett, the baby in the blue blanket who kept kicking out her left leg.
A few minutes later, the elevator doors chimed open. A frantic young man and a woman rushed out, flanked by a hospital administrator. It was the Millers. The mother, pale and distraught, wept openly.
“Where is she? Where is my baby?” the woman sobbed.
Nurse Sarah opened the nursery door just a crack, ensuring security stood guard. “Mrs. Miller, your daughter is perfectly safe. We caught the discrepancy immediately. Look through the glass—the baby in the yellow blanket is yours.”
Noah watched as the Millers rushed to the window, pressing their hands against the glass just as he had done. He saw the pure, unfiltered love and relief on their faces. But instead of feeling victorious, Noah felt an overwhelming emptiness. He had saved the babies, but he had broken his family.

A social worker named Elena gently approached Noah, crouching down to his eye level. “Noah? I’m Elena. You did a very brave thing tonight. Let’s go somewhere quiet and talk, okay?”
Noah allowed himself to be led away, but as he walked down the corridor, he looked back at the room where his father was being held. He couldn’t wrap his young mind around the biggest question of all: Why? Why did his father, a man who had always taught him to be honest, try to steal another family’s child and throw away his own?
