Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Heart

While Daniel was taken into custody for questioning, the hospital administration had the painful task of informing Claire. She was still recovering in her post-op room, pale and weak from the emergency cesarean section.

Noah walked into the room behind Elena. Claire looked up, her eyes lighting up when she saw her stepson. “Noah, sweetie... where is your dad? The nurses said there was a delay with the baby.”

Noah couldn't keep it in anymore. He ran to the side of the bed and buried his face in Claire’s blankets, sobbing uncontrollably. “I’m sorry, Claire. I’m so sorry. Dad did something bad.”

Elena gently stepped in, explaining the situation to Claire with utmost care—the switch, the motivation, and Daniel’s arrest. As the story unfolded, Claire’s hand moved from Noah’s hair to her own chest, her face registering a chaotic mix of shock, anger, and profound sorrow.

For a long moment, Claire said nothing. She looked out the window at the breaking dawn.

“Where is my daughter?” Claire asked, her voice surprisingly steady despite the tears in her eyes.

“Nurse Sarah is bringing her right now, Mrs. Bennett,” Elena said.

A moment later, the door pushed open. The real Emma Bennett, wrapped tightly in her yellow blanket now, was placed into Claire’s arms. The moment the baby touched Claire’s skin, she let out a tiny cry and pushed her left leg straight out, kicking the blanket loose.

Claire let out a breathless laugh through her tears. “It’s her. It’s really her.” She looked up at Noah, holding out her arm. “Come here, Noah.”

Noah crawled onto the edge of the bed, and Claire wrapped her free arm around him, pulling him close. “You saved our family, Noah. You did the right thing, even when it was the hardest thing in the world. I am so proud of you.”

“Is Dad going to jail forever?” Noah whispered.

Claire looked down at the beautiful, healthy baby girl in her arms, and then thought of the sick baby girl down the hall. “I don't know, honey. But we are going to figure this out. Together.”
