Chapter 6 - THE AFTERMATH AND A NEW DAWN

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden, warm light through the reinforced windows of the Bolaro estate. The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, clean autumn air that felt like a fresh beginning.

Inside the nursery, the green line on the monitor remained perfectly steady.

Nico Bolaro was sleeping peacefully in his crib, his breathing deep and regular, free of any artificial toxins for the first time in months. He looked plumper, healthier, and completely at peace.

Maya Ellis stood by the window, holding a fresh cup of black coffee. Her shoulder still ached slightly from where Marco had slammed her against the wall, but the physical pain was overshadowed by a profound sense of closure. Dr. Crane and Marco were locked away in federal custody awaiting trial, and Elena Vance was already halfway across the Atlantic on a one-way flight to South America, stripped of her wealth and power.

The heavy oak door creaked open, and Lorenzo stepped into the room. He looked tired—dark circles under his eyes, his suit jacket unbuttoned—but for the first time since Maya had met him, the terrifying, suffocating aura of a cornered mafia boss was gone. He looked simply like a father.

"He slept for six hours straight," Lorenzo said quietly, walking over to the crib and looking down at his son with a tender, adoring smile. "No fever. No distress. Just... sleeping like a normal baby."

"His body is finally recovering from the cumulative effects of the neurotoxin," Maya said, turning to face him. "Give him another week of proper nutrition and monitoring, and he’ll be completely back on track."

Lorenzo turned away from the crib, walking slowly toward Maya. He stopped a few feet away, looking at her with an intense, unreadable expression.

"You saved his life, Maya," Lorenzo said, his voice thick with emotion. "You saw what a room full of expensive doctors missed. You stood your ground against armed men. You risked everything for a child you had only known for four hours."

"That's what nurses do," Maya replied simply, offering a small, tired smile. "We protect our patients."

"Most people in your position would have packed their bags and run the moment things got dangerous," Lorenzo noted, shaking his head slightly. "You didn't run."

"I've never been very good at running away from a fight when someone needs help," Maya admitted, setting her coffee cup down. "Besides... my contract with the agency was for a full month. I still have twenty-nine days left."

Lorenzo let out a low, genuine chuckle—a warm, rich sound that completely transformed his stern face. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, thick envelope, placing it neatly on the side table.

"Your agency contract is canceled," Lorenzo said.

Maya’s heart skipped a beat. For a split second, a wave of disappointment washed over her. Is he firing me?

"Effective immediately," Lorenzo continued, his eyes locking onto hers with a warm, steady intensity, "you are no longer a temporary agency nurse. I am officially appointing you as Nico's permanent Director of Pediatric Care and Private Medical Operations for the Bolaro estate. With a salary that will allow you to buy your own hospital if you ever feel like it."

Maya stared at the envelope in shock. "Mr. Bolaro—Lorenzo—I can't just accept—"

"You earned every single cent, Maya," Lorenzo interrupted softly, taking a step closer. "And more importantly... Nico likes you. I like you. And in this house, trust is the rarest currency I possess. I don't want you to leave."

May you like

Maya looked up into his dark, arresting eyes. The danger, the mafia underworld, the terrifying nights of betrayal—they were all part of this world. But so was little Nico's sweet smile, and a man who was learning how to heal his broken family.

"Alright," Maya said softly, a genuine smile spreading across her face. "I'll stay."
