Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN SANCTUARY

The digital clock on the nursery wall glowed a soft blue: 4:15 a.m.
The room was bathed in the dim, amber glow of a nightlight. Nico was breathing softly in his crib, his chest rising and falling in a healthy, steady rhythm. Maya sat in a plush armchair beside the crib, her eyes scanning the multi-parameter monitor. Every green wave was steady. The poison was completely out of his system, and the natural strength of an eight-month-old was beginning to take over.
Suddenly, a faint metallic click echoed from the adjoining private bathroom connected to the nursery.
Maya didn't flinch. She slowly stood up, making sure her rubber-soled shoes made no sound on the hardwood floor. She slipped her hand into the pocket of her scrubs, gripping a heavy metal medical flashlight—her only improvised weapon.
The bathroom door was cracked open by an inch. A sliver of pale yellow light spilled out onto the nursery floor.
Quiet footsteps padded against the bathroom tiles. Someone was searching the medicine cabinet inside the private washroom—the backup storage where spare bottles, sterile wipes, and infant formula were kept.
Maya crept forward, planting her feet firmly, and pushed the bathroom door wide open with a sharp shove.
"Don't move," Maya commanded.
Standing in front of the open medicine cabinet was not Elena, but Marco, one of Lorenzo’s most trusted senior enforcers, holding a small brown glass vial in his calloused hand.
Marco froze, his eyes widening in shock. For a second, a dangerous look crossed his face, his hand twitching toward the Glock holstered inside his jacket. But then he saw Maya standing her ground, the heavy metal flashlight raised like a baton, and he slowly let his hands drop into the open air.
"Nurse Ellis," Marco breathed out, trying to mask his panic with a rough chuckle. "You scared the hell out of me. What are you doing in here?"
"I could ask you the same thing, Marco," Maya said, her eyes locked on the amber vial in his hand. "That isn't infant saline. That’s the exact same enteric-release neurotoxin Dr. Crane was using."
Marco’s face hardened. The easygoing, loyal enforcer facade melted away, revealing a cold, calculating predator. "You’re entirely too smart for your own good, nurse. People who notice too much in the Bolaro household usually don't live long enough to collect their severance pay."
"You're Elena's inside man," Maya realized, connecting the missing dots in an instant. "Crane wasn't working for Elena alone. Elena was working with you. You provided the security access, the outside contacts, and the underground chemical suppliers."
"Smart girl," Marco sneered, taking a slow step forward, blocking the narrow bathroom exit. "And unfortunately for you, boss man is downstairs reviewing security tapes. By the time he gets back up here, you and the kid are going to have a tragic, sudden medical relapse."
Marco lunged forward, his hand shooting out to grab Maya by the throat.
Maya didn't hesitate. Years of dealing with violent, disoriented patients in the emergency room had taught her how to handle aggression twice her size. Instead of pulling back, she stepped directly into his momentum, driving the heavy metal flashlight upward with all her might, striking Marco squarely across the bridge of his nose.
A sickening crunch echoed through the small bathroom. Marco roared in pain, stumbling backward and clutching his bleeding face.
Before he could recover, Maya kicked the brown glass vial out of his hand. It shattered against the tile floor, splashing the toxic liquid into the drain.

"You bitch—" Marco snarled, lunging at her again, his eyes filled with murderous rage. He grabbed her shoulder, slamming her hard against the bathroom wall. Maya gasped as the wind was knocked out of her lungs, but she kept her grip on the flashlight, swinging it downward and striking his knee with a sharp, cracking blow.
Marco collapsed with a yell of agony just as the heavy oak door of the nursery burst open.
