Chapter 10 - A HAPPY ENDING

Back in Chicago, the snow was falling softly outside the Bolaro estate, blanketing the courtyard in a pristine, sparkling white.
Inside the nursery, the air was warm and smelled faintly of lavender and vanilla. Nico, now a healthy, energetic toddler, was busy stacking wooden building blocks on the carpet, babbling happily to himself.
Maya sat in the armchair, watching him with a warm, contented smile. The past year had been a whirlwind of danger, suspense, and unexpected transformation—turning her from a quiet, overlooked night nurse into the most trusted person in the most powerful household in the city.
The door opened softly, and Lorenzo walked in. He was wearing a simple black sweater, his shoulders relaxed, the dark, brooding aura of the mafia boss completely replaced by the gentle warmth of a devoted father. He walked over to the carpet, sitting down cross-legged next to his son, and let Nico stack a block clumsily on his knee.
Nico giggled, clapping his small hands together. "Dada! Dada!"
Lorenzo smiled, picking his son up and tossing him gently into the air as Nico shrieked with pure delight. He caught him close to his chest, pressing a soft kiss to the toddler's dark curls.
Then, Lorenzo looked across the room at Maya. He stood up, walking over to where she sat, and extended his hand.
"Come here," Lorenzo said softly.
Maya raised an eyebrow, taking his hand as he pulled her gently to her feet. "What is this about, Lorenzo?"
Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee—that wasn't his style—but his dark eyes were shining with a profound, undeniable sincerity that spoke louder than any grand gesture.
"When you walked into this nursery a year ago, I was a man surrounded by enemies, protecting an empire built on fear, watching my son slip away through the dark," Lorenzo said, his voice deep and steady. "You brought the light back into this house, Maya. You saved my son. And along the way... you saved me, too."
He opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring that caught the warm nursery light.
"I don't know how to do normal," Lorenzo whispered with a faint, self-deprecating smile. "I'm a dangerous man in a dangerous world. But I promise you this—for the rest of my life, I will protect you and our son with every breath in my body. Will you stay in this house, and in my life, forever?"
Maya looked down at the ring, then up into the eyes of the man who had defied an empire just to keep his child safe. The fear, the uncertainty, the midnight terrors—they were all behind them now. What remained was a love forged in fire, standing unshakable in the light.
She smiled, her eyes shining with unshed tears of happiness, and placed her hand securely in his.

"Yes, Lorenzo," Maya whispered. "I'll stay."
As Nico toddled over, wrapping his small arms around their legs and laughing up at them both, the nursery was finally filled with what it had always been meant to hold: peace, safety, and an unconditional, happily-ever-after family.
