Chapter 2 - THE INNER CIRCLE

The heavy mahogany doors of the Bolaro estate’s private study remained closed until 3:00 a.m. Outside, the rain had begun to lash against the tall reinforced windows, casting long, erratic shadows across the dimly lit hallway. Inside the study, Lorenzo sat behind an oversized walnut desk, the faint glow of a desk lamp cutting harsh angles across his face.

Maya stood across from him, holding a thick ledger containing the household staff’s schedules, visitor logs, and medical supply deliveries for the past six months.

"Crane wasn't working alone," Maya said, sliding a printed delivery receipt across the desk. "Look at this shipment from three weeks ago. It was logged as standard pediatric saline solution. But the weight doesn't match, and the signature on the receiving end isn't Crane’s. It belongs to Elena Vance."

Lorenzo’s hand tightened around a crystal glass of whiskey so hard the ice cubes cracked. "Elena? My late wife’s sister? She moved into this estate to help raise Nico after Sarah passed. She practically runs this household."

"She also has unrestricted access to the nursery, the kitchen where the formulas are prepared, and the private medical wing," Maya pointed out calmly. "When I checked the nursery's internal security footage from earlier tonight—before your guards locked down the corridors—I noticed something interesting. Elena was the one who brought the midnight bottle up to the warmer at 11:45 p.m."

Lorenzo stared at the receipt, a dark storm brewing in his dark eyes. Elena had been his rock after Sarah died. She was the gentle aunt who kissed Nico goodnight, baked pastries for the staff, and wept openly whenever the baby had a fever. The idea that she could be the one deliberately poisoning her own flesh and blood felt like a physical blow to a man who had survived decades of gang warfare and betrayal.

"Family," Lorenzo muttered bitterly, staring into the dark amber liquid of his glass. "In my line of work, you expect enemies to come at you with knives in the dark. You don't expect the person braiding your sister's hair to be the one twisting the knife."

"In my experience in the hospital, grief and jealousy make people do monstrous things," Maya said gently, stepping closer to the desk. "If Elena wanted control over this estate—or if she resented the fact that Nico is the sole heir to everything your empire holds—she had every opportunity to orchestrate this slowly, making it look like a tragic, unavoidable medical condition."

Lorenzo looked up, studying Maya with a renewed intensity. Most people who found themselves trapped in his mansion would be shaking with fear, begging to be let go. Instead, this quiet, observant nurse was standing her ground, piecing together a web of betrayal with the precision of a seasoned detective.

"You're not easily frightened, are you, Maya?" Lorenzo asked, leaning back in his leather chair.

"I spent four years working the night shift in a trauma ward where patients died because people missed small details," Maya replied evenly. "Fear doesn't fix monitors, and it doesn't catch criminals."

"Good," Lorenzo stood up, towering over the desk. "Because we are going to play a dangerous game. We aren't going to arrest Elena tonight. We are going to let her think her plan is working, and we are going to watch every single move she makes."

Suddenly, a soft knock echoed at the study door. Before Lorenzo could answer, the door clicked open, and Elena Vance stepped inside, wearing a silk bathrobe, her blond hair falling softly over her shoulders, holding a fresh cup of chamomile tea.

"Lorenzo?" Elena’s voice was sweet, trembling slightly with manufactured concern. "I saw the lights on. Is everything alright with Nico? I heard shouting earlier... I was so worried."

Maya and Lorenzo exchanged a single, calculating glance. The trap had just been sprung, and the hunter was now walking directly into the lion's den.
