Chapter 5 - THE BETRAYAL UNMASKED

"DOWN ON THE FLOOR! DO IT NOW!"
Lorenzo Bolaro stormed into the nursery like a human hurricane, followed by four heavily armed guards. His dark eyes swept the room in a fraction of a second—taking in Maya, bruised and leaning against the bathroom wall, and Marco, writhing on the tile floor with a broken nose and a shattered knee.
Marco looked up, blood pouring from his nose, his face twisted in pain and pure malice. "Boss... the nurse... she went crazy—"
"Shut your lying mouth," Lorenzo roared, his voice shaking the very foundations of the room. He didn't even look at Marco as he motioned to his guards. "Strap him to a chair in the basement. Next to Crane. If he makes a single sound, gag him."
Two guards hauled Marco up by his arms, dragging his boots across the floor as he cursed furiously into the hallway.
Lorenzo crossed the room in two long strides, stopping right in front of Maya. His expression was a mix of terrifying rage and deep, profound concern. He reached out, his large, calloused hand hovering gently near her bruised shoulder before pulling back, as if afraid to cause her more pain.
"Are you hurt?" Lorenzo asked, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
"I'm fine," Maya breathed out, pushing herself upright and adjusting her stained scrubs. "Just a few bruises. But you missed Elena. She must have sent Marco in to finish the job while she stayed in her room to build an alibi."
Lorenzo’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He turned and walked out into the hallway, his boots echoing with lethal intent. "Vince! Bring Elena to the study. Now."
Ten minutes later, the grand study was filled with an oppressive, suffocating tension.
Elena Vance sat in a leather armchair across from Lorenzo’s desk. Her hair was slightly disheveled, her silk bathrobe pulled tight around her throat. She looked frightened, but beneath the fear, there was a hardened, defiant edge that had never been there before.
"Lorenzo, what is the meaning of this?" Elena demanded, her voice shaking slightly. "Dragging me out of bed in the middle of the night like a common criminal? Because of this... this nurse?"
Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He stood behind his desk, leaning forward with his knuckles pressed against the dark wood, staring at her like a judge passing a death sentence.
"Marco confessed on his way down to the vault," Lorenzo lied smoothly, a classic interrogation tactic. "He told us everything, Elena. How you orchestrated the entire poisoning scheme. How you wanted to ensure Nico never lived to inherit the Bolaro estate, leaving you and your offshore accounts as the sole beneficiaries of my late wife's trust fund."
Elena went completely rigid. All the color drained from her face, leaving her looking hollow and ghost-like. She stared at Lorenzo, her lower lip trembling—not with sorrow this time, but with cold, bitter realization.
"Marco is a fool," Elena whispered, the sweet, innocent aunt persona shattering away completely like broken glass. A cold, cynical smile twisted her lips. "He always was too weak for this kind of work."
Lorenzo’s eyes flared with absolute fury. "You tried to kill my son. Your own blood. A helpless baby."
"My sister Sarah was the weak one!" Elena suddenly snapped, standing up from the chair, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "She married a monster and gave birth to an heir that would lock me out of everything we built! I raised Sarah, Lorenzo! I gave up my life for this family, while you were out spilling blood in the streets! That boy didn't deserve to inherit an empire built on corpses!"
Lorenzo didn't scream. He didn't lose his temper. With chilling, methodical calmness, he pulled a silver-plated pistol from his holster, setting it down flat on the desk between them.

"You're family, Elena," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a whisper that sounded like a death rattle. "That is the only reason you are going to draw another breath in this city. But you are going to sign over every cent of the trust fund to Nico, you are going to confess to federal authorities on an audio recording, and then you are going to get on a private plane to a country with no extradition treaty. If you ever set foot in Chicago again, I won't just kill you—I'll make sure you wish you never existed."
Elena stared at the gun, then up at Lorenzo's cold, merciless eyes. She realized then that her game was entirely over. Defeated, she slowly sank back down into the chair, tears of bitter rage streaming down her face as she picked up the pen to sign her own exile.
