Chapter 8 - The Judgment Day

Three months later, the federal case against Viktor Vance reached its climax in the federal district court.
Marcelo sat in the front row of the wood-paneled courtroom, wearing a sharp charcoal suit. Beside him sat Victoria Hayes and a licensed child psychologist. Sofia and Leo were safe at home with their trusted nanny, completely shielded from the legal proceedings.
The prosecution presented an airtight case: forgery of death certificates, financial fraud, embezzlement, conspiracy to commit murder, and endangerment of minors. Viktor, sitting at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looked hollowed out and defeated, his expensive lawyers unable to mount a single credible defense against the mountain of digital and physical evidence.
The federal judge banged his gavel.
"Based on the overwhelming evidence presented, this court finds the defendant, Viktor Vance, guilty on all counts of racketeering, financial fraud, and conspiracy against minors," the judge announced sternly. "I sentence the defendant to thirty years in federal prison without the possibility of parole."
As the bailiffs led Viktor away in handcuffs, he briefly locked eyes with Marcelo. There was no defiance left in the man's gaze—only the bitter realization that greed had destroyed everything he tried to steal.
At the exact same moment, across town in the family division of the superior court, a final, joyful gavel fell.
The judge officially granted Marcelo full, permanent, unassailable legal adoption rights and guardianship of Sofia Vance and Leo Vance.

When Marcelo walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, his phone buzzed with an urgent notification from Victoria: “It’s official, Marcelo. They are yours before God and the law. Forever.”
Marcelo closed his eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. The war was over. The shadows were gone.
