Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary and the Storm

The transition from the ruined construction site to Marcelo’s sprawling estate felt like crossing the border between two different worlds.

Inside the mansion, the heavy mahogany doors closed out the noise of the city. Dr. Vance, Marcelo’s trusted personal physician, was already waiting in the grand foyer alongside two pediatric nurses.

"Sir, when you called, I thought it was an emergency, but this..." Dr. Vance began, his eyes widening as he saw Marcelo carrying a skeletal infant, followed closely by a silent, protective six-year-old girl clinging to Marcelo’s custom suit jacket.

"This is the highest priority I have ever set," Marcelo interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Get them into the west wing. Prepare a full medical evaluation for both of them, nutritional rehabilitation, and psychological support. I want specialists here within the hour."

Sofia balked when the nurses gently tried to guide her toward a warm bath and fresh clothes. She planted her feet firmly on the Italian marble floor, wrapping her arms around Marcelo’s leg.

"I’m not leaving you," she declared, looking up at him with fierce loyalty.

Marcelo knelt down, resting his hands gently on her shoulders. "Sofia, these ladies are going to help you clean up and give you warm clothes and good food. I will be right outside the door the entire time. You can see Leo through the adjoining glass in five minutes. Do you trust me?"

She stared at him for a long, agonizing moment, weighing his words against every broken promise she had ever experienced in her young life. Slowly, she nodded. "Don't go away."

"I won't move an inch," Marcelo promised.

While the medical staff tended to the children, Marcelo retreated to his private study. On his massive mahogany desk sat the crushed brown envelope and the photograph. He slid the contents out. Along with the photograph, there was a folded piece of cheap lined paper.

He unfolded it and began to read:

"Marcelo Vance,

If you are reading this, it means fate has brought my children into your hands. I know who you are. I know you are a man of absolute power, but more importantly, I know you are a man of absolute honor. My brother-in-law, Viktor, orchestrated my husband's 'accident' to steal our family estate. Now he wants the children out of the way so he can secure full control of the trust.

I couldn't run with both of them. I left Sofia with instructions to find someone strong enough to look past their own grief. Please protect them. Find the legal documents in the red safety box at the city bank—password is Sofia's birthday. They are the rightful heirs.

Do not trust the local authorities; Viktor has bought half the department. You are their only shield.

— Elena Vance"

Marcelo froze. Vance?

He rushed to his private family tree archives on his encrypted computer terminal. Elena Vance was the widow of his estranged cousin, Julian Vance, who had mysteriously died in a suspicious yacht explosion two years ago. Julian had been the black sheep of the family, disowned by the older generation, but he had left behind a legitimate lineage that Viktor had tried to wipe out completely.

Sofia and Leo weren't just random victims of circumstance. They were his blood. They were his kin.

The empty nursery at the end of the east hallway suddenly flashed in Marcelo's mind. The universe had spent ten years telling him he would never have biological children, only to drop his own blood right on his doorstep.
