Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed in a blur of legal victories and emotional healing.

Viktor Vance’s criminal syndicate crumbled overnight under the weight of federal indictments, financial audits, and uncorrupted law enforcement sweeps. Denied bail due to extreme flight risk and threats against minors, Viktor sat in a maximum-security federal holding facility, realizing too late that he had poked a sleeping dragon.

At the mansion, the transformation was nothing short of miraculous.

Baby Leo had gained weight, his laughter now echoing through the halls like tiny chimes. Sofia had blossomed from a feral, guarded survivor into a bright, fiercely protective older sister who insisted on helping the nurses feed Leo every morning.

Yet, invisible scars remained.

One stormy Tuesday night, a violent clap of thunder rattled the floor-to-ceiling windows of the mansion. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the nursery in a sharp, blinding white.

From down the hall, Marcelo heard a sharp gasp followed by the sound of glass shattering.

He leaped out of bed, pulling on a silk robe, and rushed into the children's suite.

Sofia was standing near the overturned bedside lamp, breathing heavily, tears streaming silently down her face. She was trembling so violently that her bare feet were stepping on shards of broken ceramic without her even noticing.

"Sofia!" Marcelo rushed forward, instantly scooping her up into his arms and carrying her away from the broken glass.

"They're coming! They're coming back!" she sobbed into his shoulder, her tiny fists gripping his robe with terrifying strength. "The noise... the loud noise... they found us!"

"No one is here, sweet girl. Look at me," Marcelo murmured, rocking her gently back and forth, ignoring the rain lashing against the windows outside. "Look at my face. You are in our home. You are with me. No one can ever touch you here."

She buried her face in his neck, crying tears of accumulated terror—every cold night, every empty formula tin, every threat whispered in the dark finally pouring out of her soul.

Marcelo held her tightly, whispering soothing words he never knew he possessed. He realized then that saving children from physical danger was only the first step. Healing their hearts would take patience, unconditional love, and time—all of which he had in endless supply now.
