Chapter 8 - A Promise Written in Gold

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of crimson and violet, the mansion was quiet. The girls were fast asleep in their bedroom upstairs, wrapped in peaceful dreams.

Gabriel led Emma up the grand spiral staircase to the third-floor balcony—a private terrace overlooking the entire estate and the distant, glowing skyline of Manhattan.

The night air was warm, carrying the fragrance of blooming jasmine from the garden below.

Emma walked to the stone balustrade, leaning against it as she looked out at the city lights. "I used to look at those city lights from my tiny apartment three years ago, terrified that every shadow held someone my father sent to find me. I never thought I’d be standing here, feeling this safe."

Gabriel stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back gently against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, his warm breath tickling her ear.

"You're safe now, Emma. Forever," he murmured. "No shadows can touch you here."

Emma leaned back into his embrace, closing her eyes, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against her back. "I know."

Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He opened it, revealing a stunning ring featuring a rare, cushion-cut yellow diamond surrounded by tiny white brilliants, glittering like a captured piece of sunshine.

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. She turned around in his arms, her eyes wide as she looked from the ring to Gabriel’s face.

"Gabriel..." she whispered.

Gabriel took a gentle breath, dropping down onto one knee on the cool stone floor of the balcony. The powerful capo, the man who had controlled empires, looked up at her with complete, unreserved devotion.

"Emma," Gabriel said, his voice deep and steady. "Six months ago, I was a man living in a fortress of my own making, blinded by fear and grief, watching my daughter suffer through security cameras. You walked into this house with nothing but a heart full of kindness, and you healed my family. You gave my daughter her legs, and you gave me back my soul."

He held up the box, his dark eyes shimmering with love.

"I don't want you to just be part of this house. I want you to be my wife. I want to build a life with you, protect you, love you, and walk beside you for every step of the rest of my days. Will you marry me?"

Emma stood frozen for a beat, her hand pressed against her lips, tears of overwhelming joy spilling down her cheeks. She looked down at the man who had turned his entire world upside down to protect her, the man who loved her not for what she could do, but for who she was.

"Yes," Emma sobbed softly, dropping to her knees right in front of him on the stone terrace, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"

Gabriel laughed—a deep, joyful sound—as he pulled her close, lifting her slightly off the ground. He brought his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that sealed their pasts into history and opened the door to their future.

When he slipped the golden ring onto her finger, it caught the moonlight, shining as brightly as the yellow dandelion Lily had given her earlier that day.
