Chapter 4 - Broken Trust

The study was bathed in deep shadows, lit only by the green bankers lamp on Gabriel’s massive mahogany desk and the glow of three laptop screens. Outside, the rain had returned, heavy drops lashing against the reinforced glass windows.

Emma stood in front of the desk, flanked by Marco and another security guard. The warmth of the morning playroom had vanished, replaced by the suffocating atmosphere of Gabriel’s true reality.

Gabriel sat behind the desk, his hands laced together, his ring glittering under the lamplight. On the wood between them lay a thick red folder stamped with classified markers.

"I gave you a chance to be honest with me, Emma," Gabriel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I praised you. I trusted you with my daughters. And yet, when my security team dug into your past beyond the surface level, we found a black hole."

Emma stood straight, her hands clasped tightly in front of her gray apron. She didn't flinch under Marco's intimidating presence, but her eyes held a profound sadness.

"I didn't lie to you about my ability to help Lily, Mr. Moretti," she said softly.

"You lied about who you are!" Gabriel snapped, slamming his palm onto the desk. The sharp crack echoed like a gunshot through the room. "Emma Brooks doesn't exist before six years ago. Your preschool credentials belong to a dead woman from Ohio. Your mother’s medical records are forged. Who sent you into my house? Was it the Valentis? The FBI?"

"Neither!" Emma insisted, her voice rising slightly before she caught herself. She took a steadying breath. "My real name is Emily Vance."

Gabriel froze. His eyes flicked to the folder, then back to her face. "Vance? Any relation to Harrison Vance?"

"He is my father," Emma revealed quietly.

The silence in the room became absolute. Marco instinctively reached toward his jacket, but Gabriel held up a single hand, stopping him.

"Explain," Gabriel commanded, his eyes burning with dangerous intensity.

"My father is a brilliant neurologist, but he is a cold, ambitious man," Emma said, her voice trembling slightly with long-buried pain. "Ten years ago, he established a private pediatric research program. He used experimental, highly painful physical therapies on children with movement disorders—therapies designed to force quick muscle contraction through stress and pain, all so he could publish papers and secure federal funding."

She looked directly into Gabriel’s eyes. "I worked as an assistant in his clinic when I was twenty-two. I saw what he was doing to those children. When I tried to report him, he used his connections and money to silence me. He tried to have me committed to a psychiatric facility to protect his reputation. I fled. A federal witness protection program helped me forge a new identity—Emma Brooks—so my father could never find me or force me back."

Gabriel listened, his sharp mind analyzing every word, comparing it to the medical reports Harrison Vance had submitted over the past year.

"If you were hiding from him, why did you take a job in my house knowing he was Lily’s primary doctor?" Gabriel asked coldness laced with suspicion.

"I didn't know at first!" Emma declared, tears finally shining in her brown eyes. "When I applied through the agency, it was just an anonymous ad for a high-security residential maid. But my first week here, I saw Dr. Vance walking down your hallway with his medical bag. I panicked. I was going to pack my bags and run that very night."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I saw what he was doing to Lily," Emma said, stepping forward, ignoring Marco's warning movement. "I saw him using the same cold, aggressive techniques that terrified those children years ago. He was keeping her dependent on his treatments, convincing you she needed eternal medical intervention so he could collect your astronomical fees and use her as a case study for his next book! I couldn't leave her, Mr. Moretti. I couldn't let him break her spirit the way he tried to break mine."

Gabriel stared at her, his mind racing. The pieces of the puzzle slammed together with terrifying clarity. Harrison Vance’s persistent insistence on surgical options. His resistance to non-traditional methods. His exorbitant bills that Gabriel had paid without a second thought because he was desperate for his daughter to walk.

Gabriel slowly stood up from behind his desk. He walked around the mahogany furniture until he stood inches away from Emma.

"You risked your safety, your hidden identity, and your freedom... to protect my daughter from her own doctor?" Gabriel asked softly.

"Lily is an innocent child," Emma whispered, her voice filled with quiet conviction. "She deserved someone in her corner who saw her as a little girl, not an income stream or a medical project."

Gabriel looked at her for a long moment. The suspicion in his dark eyes melted away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of humility and something deeper—something he hadn't felt toward any woman since the death of his wife.

Before Gabriel could speak, the emergency comms unit on Marco’s belt beeped loudly. Marco pulled it out, listened for two seconds, and his face turned pale.

"Boss," Marco said urgency lacing his tone. "Sensors at the south gate just tripped. Two unmarked SUVs have breached the outer perimeter. They aren't Valentis—they're tactical units with federal warrants, led by a civilian vehicle."

Gabriel’s eyes flashed with lethal rage. "Vance."

"He knew he was fired this morning," Marco spat. "He must have alerted his federal contacts that an illegal fugitive—Emma—was living on your property, using it as an excuse to bring a federal raid right to our doorstep!"
