Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Estate

Red emergency lights flashed silently along the cornices of the Moretti mansion. Outside, tires shrieked against wet gravel as four tactical vehicles slammed to a halt near the grand fountain. Armed men in black tactical gear poured out, forming a perimeter around the entrance.

Inside the master safe room—a reinforced concrete bunker concealed behind the library bookcase—Emma sat on a leather sofa, holding both Sophia and Lily in her lap. The twins were scared by the flashing red lights, but Emma hummed a soft, reassuring lullaby, gently rocking them back and forth.

The heavy steel door of the bunker slid open, and Gabriel stepped inside. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a dark shoulder holster over his crisp white shirt. His eyes immediately searched the room, softening when he saw Emma comforting his daughters.

"Are they safe?" Gabriel asked quietly, locking the door behind him.

"They are fine," Emma replied, looking up. "Sophia fell asleep a few minutes ago. Lily is holding Teddy."

Gabriel knelt beside them. Lily reached out with her small hand, touching her father’s face. "Daddy, is the rain making loud noises?"

"Just thunder, my sweet girl," Gabriel lied gently, kissing her forehead. "Nothing that can touch you in here."

He looked up at Emma. "Harrison Vance is outside with a team of federal marshals. He brought a sealed warrant for your arrest, claiming you kidnapped his daughter—you—and that I am harboring a federal fugitive. He’s using federal authority to force a search of this entire compound. He wants to destroy you to protect his medical career, and he wants to search my files while he’s at it."

Emma’s breath hitched. "Gabriel, if they take me... my father will use his legal team to lock me in an institution. I'll never be free again."

Gabriel reached out, his large, warm hand covering hers. The touch was gentle, yet filled with an unbreakable promise. "No one is taking you anywhere, Emma. You protected my daughter when I was too blind to see who was hurting her. Now it is my turn to protect you."

"You can't fight the federal government, Gabriel," Emma whispered in fear. "Even with your wealth and power, a shootout with marshals will destroy everything you built for your girls."

Gabriel smiled—a grim, brilliant smirk that showed why he ruled the city's underbelly. "Who said anything about a shootout? In my world, Emma, we don't beat authority with bullets. We beat them with leverage."

He pulled a satellite phone from his pocket and pressed a speed-dial button. He put the phone on speaker.

"Speak," a deep, raspy voice came through the line.

"District Attorney Miller," Gabriel said smoothly. "I believe you are currently preparing your re-election campaign."

"Moretti?" the DA’s voice sounded tense. "Why are you calling me at one in the morning? I hear there’s a federal tactical team outside your gate."

"There is," Gabriel replied calmly. "Led by Dr. Harrison Vance, who claims to be executing a fugitive arrest. What Dr. Vance doesn't know is that five minutes ago, my legal team transmitted a flash drive directly to your personal server. That drive contains ten years of encrypted medical records from Vance’s private research facilities. Human trials on unconsenting minors, systematic financial fraud, and forged federal credentials."

Silence hung on the phone line for three agonizing seconds.

"Is this data verified?" DA Miller asked, his tone shifting instantly from annoyance to predatory interest.

"Fully verified by federal witness protection files," Gabriel said, glancing at Emma. "In ten minutes, that drive will be leaked to the New York Times—unless you arrive at my estate with a state injunction, revoke the federal search warrant under jurisdiction of medical elder and child abuse, and arrest Harrison Vance yourself. You'll be a hero on the morning news, Miller. The prosecutor who brought down a high-society medical monster."

"Give me seven minutes," DA Miller snapped, and the line went dead.

Emma looked at Gabriel in sheer disbelief. "You... you had those files?"

"My security team didn't just find out who you were today, Emma," Gabriel admitted softly. "Once Marco discovered your real name, he spent the last four hours breaking into Vance’s secure archives. I was never going to hand you over to him. I was building the cage to put him in."

Tears spilled over Emma’s lashes, but this time they were tears of profound relief. She reached out and impulsively wrapped her arms around Gabriel’s neck. Gabriel stiffened in surprise for a fraction of a second before his arms closed tightly around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.

"Thank you," she sobbed into his shoulder.

"You saved my family, Emma," Gabriel murmured into her hair. "Nobody touches what’s mine."
