Chapter 6 - The Fall of Harrison Vance

Twenty minutes later, the iron gates of the Moretti estate swung open under the bright glare of spotlights. Heavy rain continued to pour, turning the gravel drive into a slick mirror.

Dr. Harrison Vance stood near the federal vehicles, his designer trench coat soaked at the hem. He was arguing heatedly with a federal marshal when three black sedans bearing state prosecution emblems screeched to a halt behind the tactical units.

District Attorney Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by four state troopers. He marched directly toward Vance, holding a rolled document.

"What is the meaning of this interruption, Miller?" Vance sneered, adjusting his glasses. "I am executing a federal fugitive retrieval warrant! That mobster inside is holding my daughter hostage!"

"The warrant is stayed, Dr. Vance," Miller announced loudly, his voice echoing over the sound of idling engines. "By order of the State Supreme Court."

Vance gasped. "On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of a 42-count indictment issued against you twenty minutes ago," Miller declared, stepping aside as two state troopers stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs. "Harrison Vance, you are under arrest for illegal human medical experimentation, corporate fraud, tax evasion, and child endangerment."

"This is absurd! This is a setup by Gabriel Moretti!" Vance screamed, struggling as the troopers forced his arms behind his back. "He’s a criminal! A murderer!"

"Mr. Moretti provided the paper trail, Doctor," Miller replied coldly. "And your own internal servers signed the confession. Take him away."

As the state troopers shoved a cursing, frantic Vance into the back of a state cruiser, the front doors of the Moretti mansion opened.

Gabriel stepped out onto the wide stone porch, holding an umbrella over Emma. Behind them, Marco and two household staff were holding hands with Lily and Sophia, who were wrapped in warm yellow raincoats.

Vance caught sight of Emma standing beside the mafia boss. His face twisted with bitter rage. "Emily! You ungrateful child! I gave you everything! You destroyed your own father for a mobster!"

Emma walked down the stone steps, stopping a few feet from the police car. The rain splashed against her boots, but she stood tall, her posture radiating a strength she had never known she possessed.

"You gave me fear, Harrison," Emma said, her voice clear and cold, carrying over the wind. "You tried to break me, and you tried to break Lily. But love builds what cruelty destroys. Enjoy your cell."

Vance opened his mouth to scream another insult, but a trooper shoved his head down and slammed the door shut. The police cruisers pulled away, their red and blue lights fading into the dark, rainy night.

Gabriel walked up behind Emma, holding the umbrella over her head. The silence that settled over the estate was profound—a stillness that felt like the morning after a decade-long war.

"It’s over," Emma whispered, watching the tail lights vanish into the trees. "It’s finally over."

"No," Gabriel said gently, placing a warm hand on the small of her back. "It’s not over. It’s just beginning."

He turned her around to face him. Under the soft amber lighting of the grand entryway, Gabriel looked down at her with a warmth that completely shattered the cold persona of the underworld boss.

"Emma, your forced identity ends tonight," Gabriel said firmly. "You don't have to run anymore. You don't have to hide in laundry rooms or pretend to be just a maid. I want you to stay here—not as an employee, but as a permanent part of this family. If... if you will have us."

Emma looked back at the house. In the doorway, Sophia was jumping in a puddle, laughing, while Lily was standing—completely unassisted, holding onto Marco’s hand with a bright, victorious smile.

Emma looked up into Gabriel’s dark, earnest eyes. "Are you offering me a job, Mr. Moretti?"

May you like

Gabriel smiled—a genuine, beautiful smile that reached his eyes. "I’m asking you to help me raise my daughters, Emma. And maybe... let me show you what it’s like to be taken care of for once."

Emma let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob. "I’d like that, Gabriel. I’d really like that."
