Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Spring arrived in Chicago, melting the harsh winter ice and filling the air with warm breezes and fresh green growth.

At the Haven, the gardens bloomed with bright flowers. Lily had returned to school—a secure, prestigious private academy—where she thrived, making friends, playing soccer, and laughing without a care in the world.

Claire had officially transitioned into a new role. With Roman’s financial backing and encouragement, she had enrolled in a top-tier university to complete her degree in pediatric nursing. But despite her busy schedule, her home remained at the Haven.

One sunny Saturday afternoon, Roman, Claire, and Lily walked along the private beach below the cliffside estate. Lily was running ahead, chasing seagulls and collecting smooth lake stones in a small plastic bucket.

Roman walked side-by-side with Claire, their fingers lightly brushing together as they walked along the water's edge.

"How was your final exam today?" Roman asked, turning to look at her.

"I aced it," Claire smiled, a bright, triumphant look on her face. "Professor said my clinical reports were the best in the class."

"I never doubted you for a second," Roman said.

They stopped near a large piece of driftwood. Up ahead, Lily called out, "Look! A red stone!" and knelt down to dig in the sand.

Roman turned to face Claire fully. He reached into his coat pocket and brought out a small, velvet box.

Claire’s breath hitched. She looked from the box up to Roman’s blue eyes, which were no longer cold or distant, but filled with a profound, tender love.

"Roman..."

"Claire," Roman said, his voice low and rich with emotion. "Six months ago, my world was dying. I had lost my way, my home was filled with poison, and I was losing my daughter. You walked into my life, carried my child in your arms, and saved us both. You didn't just protect Lily; you taught me how to feel again. You showed me what a real family looks like."

He opened the box, revealing a stunning, elegant diamond ring that sparkled brightly under the afternoon sun.

"I don't offer you a mafia boss's empire," Roman said softly. "I offer you a clean life, a devoted heart, and a home where you will always be loved. Will you marry me, Claire? Will you be my wife, and Lily's mother?"

Claire’s eyes filled with happy tears. She looked past Roman at Lily, who had stopped digging and was watching them with a massive, expectant grin, giving two tiny thumbs up from down the beach.

Claire laughed through her tears, stepping close to Roman, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes," Claire whispered fiercely. "Yes, Roman! A thousand times yes."

Roman slid the ring onto her finger, pulled her close, and kissed her deeply, as the gentle sound of the lake waves washed over the shore. Lily came running up, throwing her arms around both of their legs, shouting, "Yay! Claire is staying forever!"
