Chapter 2 - Shadows in Mercy West

The fluorescent lights of the Mercy West emergency waiting room hummed with a harsh, relentless buzz. Roman stood against the tiled wall, his tailored suit completely out of place against the cracked plastic chairs and scuffed floors. His hands were stuffed deep into his pockets, but beneath the fabric, his fists were clenched so tightly his nails bit into his palms.

Claire sat on a metal bench across from him. Her knees were drawn up to her chest, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. The front of her apron was dark with dried sweat and water, yet she made no move to wash or rest. Every time the heavy double doors swung open, her head snapped up, her dark eyes searching the faces of the medical staff.

"She's going to make it," Roman said, his voice flat, dangerously quiet. He was speaking to Claire, but mostly he was trying to convince the vast, unyielding dark that had settled over his chest. "She has to."

Claire looked up, meeting his cold blue eyes. "She was burning, Roman. Poisoned or severely infected—either way, her heart was working twice as hard just to keep her breathing. How did no one in your house see it?"

Before Roman could answer, the double doors swung open again. Dr. Sarah Lin, the chief attending physician, stepped out pulling off her surgical mask. Her expression was grave, etched with exhaustion.

Roman took two long strides toward her. "How is she?"

"She's stabilized for now," Dr. Lin said softly. "We pumped her stomach, managed to reduce the high fever, and put her on a broad-spectrum IV antibiotic. But Mr. Blackwell... this wasn't an ordinary fever."

"Explain," Roman commanded, the authority returning to his tone out of instinct.

"We found traces of a heavy synthetic compound in her bloodstream. It’s an tasteless, odorless liquid toxic agent that causes gradual organ distress, simulating a rapid viral infection," Dr. Lin explained, keeping her voice low. "If she had gone another two hours without medical intervention, her kidneys would have shut down completely. Someone was dosing her. Slowly. Systematically."

The air left Roman’s lungs. Murder. Someone was trying to kill his five-year-old daughter inside his own home.

Suddenly, the far doors of the hallway burst open. The clicking of high heels echoed sharply down the corridor. Vanessa walked in, flanked by two of Roman’s top lieutenants, Marcus and Dante. Vanessa wore her silk coat draped elegantly over her shoulders, her hair immaculate, her lips painted a perfect crimson.

"Roman, darling!" Vanessa cried out, placing a delicate hand over her heart as she rushed toward him. "It was absolute chaos at the restaurant! I had to apologize to all our guests. Is the poor little thing alright? I told the nanny she wasn't looking well this morning, but—"

"Stop," Roman whispered.

Vanessa halted, taken aback by the ice in his voice. "Roman?"

"Did you touch her tonight, Vanessa?" Roman asked, turning slowly to face her. His eyes were devoid of any human warmth, two pieces of polished flint.

"What are you implying?" Vanessa’s voice tightened, her delicate brow furrowing in practiced outrage. "I am your wife! I came as fast as I could after handling the media and our investors! You left the entire Monarch Room in ruin for a... a waitress!" She cast a venomous glance toward Claire.

"The waitress saved Lily’s life," Roman said, stepping closer to Vanessa until he towered over her. "And someone in my inner circle poisoned her."

Vanessa’s eyes flickered—a fraction of a second, a tiny twitch of the eyelid that anyone else would have missed. But Roman had built an empire on reading men’s faces before he decided whether to destroy them. He saw the flash of terror behind her manicured mask.

"That's ridiculous," Vanessa scoffed softly, stepping back into the shadow of Marcus. "She probably ate something bad from your kitchen. You know how careless the prep staff can be."

Claire stood up from the bench, her chin held high despite her exhaustion. "I served your table tonight, Mrs. Blackwell. Lily didn't touch her food. But you gave her three sips from your special imported bottled water. You personally poured it for her."

Vanessa turned on Claire with pure disgust. "Shut your mouth, you little gutter rat! How dare you accuse me—"

"Marcus," Roman said quietly.

His chief lieutenant stepped forward instantly. "Boss?"

"Take Vanessa to the Lake Forest estate," Roman ordered, never breaking eye contact with his wife. "Lock the gates. Cut the landlines. confiscate her phone, her car keys, her passports. No one enters. No one leaves."

Vanessa gasped, her pale skin turning utterly white. "You can't do this to me, Roman! My father is a judge! My family—"

"Your family exists because I permit it," Roman snapped, his tone lethal. "Take her."

Marcus did not hesitate. Despite Vanessa’s sharp screams and thrashing, he grabbed her arm firmly and escorted her out of the hospital corridor. Her shrieks faded into the distance, leaving only the quiet hum of the machines and the heavy silence between Roman and Claire.

Roman turned to Claire. He looked at her torn uniform, her weary eyes, her trembling hands.

"You're not going back to the restaurant," Roman said. "You're coming with me."

May you like

"I have a life, Mr. Blackwell," Claire replied, her voice steady despite her fear. "I have a small apartment, shifts to work..."

"You saved my daughter," Roman said, stepping close to her. For the first time, his voice held a trace of raw, vulnerable emotion. "And until I find out who sent that poison, you are the only person on this planet I trust near her. Name your price. But you are staying by her side."
