Chapter 3 - The Web of Betrayal

By dawn, Lily had been moved to a private, heavily guarded floor of the hospital. Armed men stood at every exit, dressed in sharp black suits, their eyes scanning every doctor and nurse who passed. Inside the room, the morning sun poured softly through the blinds, casting golden stripes across the crisp white sheets.

Lily opened her eyes.

Claire was sitting right beside her bed, gently rubbing warm cream onto the little girl's dry hands. Roman stood at the foot of the bed, his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up, looking like a man who hadn't slept in a week.

"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her voice tiny and rasping.

Roman was at her side in an instant. He took her small hand, pressing it against his cheek. "I'm here, baby. Daddy's right here."

Lily looked past him, her dark eyes resting on Claire. "The lady with the water..."

"I'm Claire, sweetie," Claire said, smiling softly as she stroked Lily's forehead. "You're in a safe place now. How do you feel?"

"My tummy doesn't hurt as much," Lily murmured. "The lady in the red dress... she told me to drink the water. She said if I told Daddy I felt sick, he would be mad at me."

Roman felt a cold wave of rage crash through his chest. Vanessa had not only been poisoning his child; she had been emotionally manipulating her, keeping the girl quiet through fear.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Marcus slipped into the room, holding a encrypted black tablet. He caught Roman's eye and gave a subtle nod.

Roman kissed Lily’s forehead gently. "I have to step out for a moment, sweetheart. Claire will stay with you."

"Don't go long, Daddy," Lily whispered.

"I won't."

In the hallway, away from the hospital room, Marcus handed Roman the tablet. "We went through Vanessa’s private accounts, Boss. It took our tech guys three hours to break the encryption on her burner phone."

"What did you find?"

"She wasn't working alone," Marcus said grimly. "She’s been in contact with Victor Vance."

Roman’s jaw tightened. Victor Vance was his chief rival—a ruthless, dishonorable cartel leader who had been trying to seize control of Chicago’s northern shipping docks for over five years.

"Vance was funding her family's failing real estate firm," Marcus continued. "In exchange, Vanessa was supposed to slowly eliminate Lily, then move on to you. Once Lily was gone, Vanessa stood to inherit fifty percent of the Blackwell legitimate assets through the prenuptial agreement's family clause. If you were destroyed by grief—or killed in the aftermath—Vance took the docks, and Vanessa walked away with two hundred million dollars."

Roman stared down at the text logs on the screen.

Vanessa: The child is weak tonight. She won't last the weekend. Roman suspects nothing. He thinks she just misses Emily.

Vance: Good. Once the kid is out of the picture, we execute stage two. Make sure Blackwell is broken.

A dark, terrifying stillness settled over Roman Blackwell. The grief that had consumed him since his first wife Emily died suddenly transformed. It solidified into an absolute, unshakeable purpose.

"They thought I was weak," Roman said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "They thought because I mourned Emily, I was blind."

"What are your orders, Boss?" Marcus asked. "Should I take care of Vance?"

"No," Roman said slowly. "Vance thinks he’s playing a game of chess. He thinks Vanessa is his queen. I want him to believe the plan is still working. Let Vanessa sit in Lake Forest. Let her think I’m losing my mind with grief at the hospital. Let Vance think I am broken."

"And the girl?" Marcus asked, referring to Claire.

Roman glanced through the small glass window of the hospital room. Claire was sitting on the edge of the bed, holding a small book, reading a story to Lily in a animated, gentle voice. Lily was smiling—a real, genuine smile that Roman hadn't seen in over two years.

"Claire stays with us," Roman said softly. "She's not a servant anymore. Protect her with your life."
