Chapter 8 - The Shadow War Concluded

In the weeks following the public collapse of Vanessa and Victor Vance, Chicago’s underworld underwent a seismic shift.
With Vance behind bars facing life without parole, his criminal network fractured and collapsed. Roman did not use the opportunity to expand his illegal territories. Instead, he did something that shocked the entire city.
Sitting in his high-rise headquarters, surrounded by his top advisors and legal counsel, Roman signed a series of sweeping legal documents.
"Are you sure about this, Boss?" Marcus asked, watching Roman sign the final page. "This legally transfers all of our shipping operations, warehouses, and transport fleets into legitimate, audited commercial corporations."
"I am entirely sure," Roman said, placing the pen down. "For twenty years, I built an empire out of shadow and fear because I thought power was the only thing that could protect the people I cared about. I was wrong. The shadows are what allowed snake like Vanessa to slither into my home."
He looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
"We are liquidating all non-legitimate assets," Roman ordered. "Every dollar goes into a clean, transparent trust fund for Lily, and into a medical foundation dedicated to pediatric toxicology and child protection."
"And your standing with the other families?" Marcus asked.
"They know if they respect my legitimate boundaries, we prosper together," Roman said calmly. "And if they cross me, they know what I am capable of. I am retiring from the underworld, Marcus. My only business now is being a father."
Later that evening, Roman returned to the Haven.
The heavy atmosphere of threat that had hung over the estate for months was entirely gone. As he walked through the front doors, he heard sound that brought a real, deep warmth to his heart: the clear, bright sound of Lily’s laughter echoing down the hallway.
He walked into the living room. A grand fire crackled in the hearth. Lily was sitting on the rug, wearing flannel pajamas, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks. Claire was sitting beside her, helping her stack the high towers.
Lily looked up and her face lit up. "Daddy!"
She scrambled to her feet and ran across the room, throwing her small arms around his legs. Roman swept her up into his arms, kissing her cheek, holding her close against his chest.
"How is my brave girl doing today?" Roman asked softly.
"I built a super big castle!" Lily cheered, pointing toward the rug. "Claire said we can build a moat tomorrow!"
Roman looked over Lily’s head at Claire. She was standing up, brushing off her jeans, watching them with a quiet, joyful smile.
"Thank you, Claire," Roman said, his voice full of an emotion he no longer tried to hide.

"For the blocks?" she teased gently.
"For everything," Roman said.
