Chapter 7 - Reckoning at the Empire

The Grand Ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel was bathed in crystal light and filled with Chicago’s most powerful figures. Corrupt politicians, high-ranking syndicate bosses, weapons brokers, and elite socialites mingled over champagne, whispering hungrily about the fall of Roman Blackwell.

Victor Vance stood near the front stage, surrounding himself with six heavy-set bodyguards. He looked smug, casually swirling his drink.

When the double doors opened, Vanessa walked in. She was wearing a dazzling red silk gown, strutting down the carpet like a queen arriving at her coronation. She immediately caught Vance’s eye, giving him a microscopic nod of victory.

Then, the room went dead silent.

Roman Blackwell walked into the hall.

He did not look like a broken man. He did not look like a father destroyed by grief. He walked with the terrifying, absolute authority of an emperor entering a battlefield. His posture was commanding, his eyes cold ice.

And beside him, holding his arm with graceful poise, was Claire Hayes.

Vanessa’s smile froze instantly. Her eyes bulged as she saw Claire—the waitress who was supposed to have been intimidated, discarded, or silenced—walking openly on Roman’s arm, wearing diamonds and a designer dress.

Roman walked up to the central microphone on the elevated stage. The heavy chatter in the room instantly died down.

"Friends, associates, enemies," Roman’s voice boomed through the high-grade audio system, calm and clear. "You were all invited here tonight under the impression that you were witnessing my surrender. You were told I was ready to step down, hand over my ports, and bow out."

Victor Vance frowned, stepping closer to the stage. "Blackwell, what is this? Cut the speech and sign the dock transfer agreements."

Roman ignored him, looking down at Vanessa, who was standing near the front row, her face growing paler by the second.

"A few weeks ago, my daughter, Lily, nearly died," Roman continued, his voice sending a chill through the room. "Many of you thought it was a tragic illness. But it wasn't illness. It was poison."

A violent murmur erupted through the elite crowd.

"And the poison," Roman said, pointing a finger directly at Vanessa, "was administered by my wife, Vanessa Blackwell."

"Lie!" Vanessa shrieked, panic breaking through her polished facade. "He’s insane! Grief has made him crazy! Guards, drag him down!"

None of Roman’s men moved.

"Two days ago, my team retrieved full audio recordings and encrypted text exchanges between Vanessa and Victor Vance," Roman declared.

With a flick of Marcus’s hand, the massive projection screens behind the stage lit up. High-definition images of text logs, bank transfer receipts showing millions moving from Vance's offshore accounts to Vanessa's family shell companies, and audio files began playing through the ballroom speakers.

Vance's recorded voice echoed loudly across the room: “Once the kid is out of the picture, we execute stage two. Make sure Blackwell is broken.”

The room exploded into chaos. The other family bosses turned toward Vance with disgust and outrage; in the underworld code, targeting a man's innocent child was an unpardonable sin.

"You trap-setting bastard!" Vance roared, drawing a concealed firearm from beneath his jacket.

Before Vance could raise the weapon, Roman pulled a sleek black pistol from his jacket with terrifying speed.

BANG.

A single shot echoed through the hall. Vance’s gun flew from his hand as a bullet tore through his wrist. Vance collapsed to his knees, screaming in pain, holding his shattered hand. Within seconds, Roman’s lieutenants moved in, disarming Vance’s bodyguards and pinning Vance to the floor.

Vanessa tried to bolt for the exit, but Claire stepped directly into her path.

Vanessa lunged at Claire, her face contorted in rage. "You ruined everything, you little bitch!"

Claire didn't flinch. As Vanessa reached her, Claire stepped aside with practiced agility, caught Vanessa's arm, and used her momentum to send the socialite crashing face-first onto the polished marble floor.

Two federal agents—whom Roman had discreetly invited to witness the undeniable financial evidence—stepped forward immediately, pulling Vanessa up and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

"Vanessa Blackwell, Victor Vance," the lead federal agent announced loudly, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder of a minor, racketeering, and corporate fraud."

Vanessa thrashed against the handcuffs, her lipstick smeared, her hair ruined, sobbing hysterically as she was dragged past the very high-society guests she had sought to impress.

Roman walked down from the stage, stopping in front of the bleeding, pinned Victor Vance.

"You tried to take my daughter," Roman said softly, looking down at his rival. "You will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal facility. And every day you wake up in that cell, remember this: I own the guards."
